The subjective symptoms called "post-traumatic cold intolerance" were analysed in a study of 40 patients with a history of digital trauma (amputation, neurovascular laceration, or comminuted fracture requiring surgical reconstruction). The patients were individually interviewed to obtain detailed information about perception of each symptom as well as the pattern of symptoms of post-traumatic cold intolerance. The study confirmed the high incidence of the condition and its potentially disabling nature. Although the individual symptoms described by the patients have a limited number of categories, the subjective expression of cold intolerance is too varied to allow an adequate definition or assessment to be based on any single symptom or group of symptoms.

It has been well established that adenosine plays a key role in the control of inflammation through G protein coupled receptors and recently shown that it can regulate thermogenesis. Here we investigated the specific requirements of the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) in mature adipocytes for thermogenic functionality and metabolic homeostasis. We generated fat tissue specific adenosine A2A receptor knock-out mice to assess the influence of signaling through this receptor on brown and beige fat functionality, obesity, insulin sensitivity, inflammation and liver function.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays an important role in maintaining body temperature in newborn mammals; however, its mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we report the identification of a special population of brown adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ASCs) in neonatal mice that highly express CD45 and can be differentiated into adipocytes with lower thermogenic ability. These CD45 adipocytes also characteristically contained complement C5a receptor 1(C5aR1) on the cell membrane.
