Background: An audit of both the emergency and elective abdominal aortic surgery that was performed in a rural surgical service, was carried out.
Methods: Retrospective data analysis was performed on 41 patients who were treated for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) during an 8-year period from 1989 to 1996. Postoperative outcomes were analysed with respect to patient age, mode of presentation (elective or emergency), transfusion requirements and pre-existing cardiac and respiratory disease. Univariate analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test, and the odds ratio for adverse outcome was calculated.
Results: A postoperative mortality rate of 5.8% in elective repairs and 68% in cases of rupture was noted. Pre-existing respiratory disease, transfusion requirements of more than six units and presentation with retroperitoneal leak or rupture correlated with postoperative mortality, while age and pre-existing cardiac disease were shown not to be predictive of adverse outcome following surgery.
Conclusions: An overall improvement in operative outcomes in the institution (Wimmera Base Hospital) that was audited would be affected by earlier referral for elective repair in selected patients. Like others, the authors believe that age on its own is not a contraindication to elective AAA repair.

Aims: Compare the prevalence of age-related cataract and the cataract surgical coverage rate between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and explore differences in these estimates across location and time.
Methods: The Joanna Briggs Institute guidance for systematic reviews of prevalence studies was followed. A systematic search of Medline, Embase, Web of Science and grey literature from database inception to June 2022 was performed.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of porcine pancreatic enzymes (Creon pancrelipase) in comparison to microbial-derived alpha amylase (MD amylase) on the small intestine wall structure, mucosal glycogen accumulation, and enterocyte turnover. The impact of enzyme supplementation on the small intestine was explored in 18 pigs with surgically induced exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). Four healthy pigs served as the control group.

Prcis: Guardian education level and frequency of surgical interventions are key determinants of knowledge in primary congenital glaucoma, highlighting the need for targeted educational strategies.
Background: Management of congenital glaucoma poses unique challenges, particularly concerning the patient guardians' understanding of the condition, which is crucial for treatment adherence and follow-up compliance. This study aimed to assess guardians' knowledge levels and identify the influencing factors.

Introduction: Cervical dysplasia is a precursor lesion of cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in women, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the development of cervical dysplasia in women treated at the Santa María del Socorro Hospital in Ica, Peru, between 2017 and 2019.
Methods: An observational case-control study was conducted with 92 cases of women with confirmed high-grade intraepithelial lesion and 184 controls with consecutive negative results in Pap smears.
