Local chemical gradients can have a significant impact on bacterial population distributions within subsurface environments by evoking chemotactic responses. These local gradients may be created by consumption of a slowly diffusing nutrient, generation of a local food source from cell lysis, or dissolution of nonaqueous phase liquids trapped within the interstices of a soil matrix. We used a random walk simulation algorithm to study the effect of a local microscopic gradient on the swimming behavior of bacteria in a porous medium. The model porous medium was constructed using molecular dynamics simulations applied to a fluid of equal-sized spheres. The chemoattractant gradient was approximated with spherical symmetry, and the parameters for the swimming behavior of soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida were based on literature values. Two different mechanisms for bacterial chemotaxis, one in which the bacteria responded to both positive and negative gradients, and the other in which they responded only to positive gradients, were compared. The results of the computer simulations showed that chemotaxis can increase migration through a porous medium in response to microscopic-scale gradients. The simulation results also suggested that a more significant role of chemotaxis may be to increase the residence time of the bacteria in the vicinity of an attractant source.

Amniotic epithelial stem cells (AEC) hold potential for tissue regeneration, especially through their conditioned medium (AEC-CM) due to their immunomodulatory and regenerative effects. Nevertheless, advanced drug delivery systems such as hydrogels are needed to enable clinical applications. Herein, an gellable hyaluronic acid and polyethylene glycol-based iEDDA-cross-linked hydrogel was developed for the encapsulation and controlled release of AEC-CM.

A novel environmentally friendly adsorbent, poly(limonene--divinylbenzene--2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid, LIM--DVB--AMPS), was synthesized and applied for the adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions in this study. The structure, morphology, and thermal stability of the green adsorbent were determined by the FTIR, SEM, TGA/DTA/DTG, and BET techniques, ζ potential, and elemental analysis. The efficiency of the adsorption process was improved with respect to several experimental conditions, viz.

In order to promote low-carbon sustainable development in the ecological environment and improve the efficiency of hydrogen and natural gas energy utilization, this project carried out research on the explosive effects of different thicknesses of ordered porous media on the hydrogen-methane gas mixture. A detailed discussion was conducted based on the critical quenching hydrogen blending ratio under the thicknesses of 50 mm and 60 mm of ordered porous media. The results indicate that the critical quenching hydrogen blending ratio is 9% for a thickness of 50 mm and 20% for a thickness of 60 mm, indicating that greater thickness enhances flame suppression capabilities.

Background And Objectives: The liver, a vital metabolic organ, is always susceptible to various diseases that ultimately lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, acute liver failure, chronic liver failure, and even cancer. Optimal and specific medicine delivery in various diseases, hepatectomy, shunt placement, and other surgical interventions to reduce liver damage, transplantation, optimal preservation, and revival of the donated organ all rely on a complete understanding of perfusion and mass transfer in the liver. This study aims to simulate the computational fluid dynamics of perfusion and the temporal-spatial distribution of a medicine in a healthy liver to evaluate the hemodynamic characteristics of flow and medicine transport with the purpose of more effective liver treatment.

The application of nanocomposites based on polyacrylamide hydrogels as well as silica nanoparticles in various tasks related to the petroleum industry has been rapidly developing in the last 10-15 years. Analysis of the literature has shown that the introduction of nanoparticles into hydrogels significantly increases their structural and mechanical characteristics and improves their thermal stability. Nanocomposites based on hydrogels are used in different technological processes of oil production: for conformance control, water shutoff in production wells, and well killing with loss circulation control.
