Atlantic salmon () is an important source of food globally; however, fillet color can significantly affect consumer purchasing, leading to potential food waste. Fish diets can be supplemented with astaxanthin to increase the organic pigment, carotenoid, responsible for flesh coloration; however, there is variation in the amount of overall fillet coloration in response to feeding astaxanthin. The uptake of this pigment is influenced by the environment and genetics and has been shown to be heritable.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition that affects the quality of life of older men. Specific micronutrients, including retinol, retinyl esters, carotenoids, vitamin E, and vitamin C, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the correlation between serum concentrations of these micronutrients and BPH is unclear.

Background: β-ionone is a terminal cyclic analog of beta-carotenoids widely found in plants. In recent years, accumulating evidence has shown that β-ionone exerts antitumor effects on various malignant tumors. However, limited studies have revealed the role of β-ionone in regulating the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of prostate cancer (PCa) cells.

Background: Multi-vitamin multi-mineral (MVMM) products often come in several single-substance capsules from different manufacturers. However, attempts to mix several vitamins and minerals into one MVMM product have been complicated and often involve legal concerns. This study aimed to comparatively investigate the changes in laboratory parameters and the quality of life (QOL) among individuals who received different MVMM formulations.

Carotenoid composition in wild-caught spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) broodstocks: effects on gonad development.

Fish Physiol Biochem

August 2022

Department of Zoology, Erode Arts and Science College, Affiliated to Bharathiar University, Rangampalayam, Erode, 638 009, Tamil Nadu, India.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how carotenoid levels in wild-caught spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) broodstocks affect reproductive performance and larvae quality during their reproductive season.
  • Key carotenoids like fucoxanthin, astaxanthin, lutein, and β-carotene were analyzed in various tissues (muscle, liver, gonads) to understand their changes during sexual maturation.
  • Findings indicated significant differences in carotenoid levels across tissues, with mature ovaries having higher concentrations of lutein and increasing astaxanthin, suggesting that carotenoids play a crucial role in enhancing reproductive potential and gonadal development in this species.
