Stress, mood disorders and memory in headache.

Int J Clin Pharmacol Res

Published: January 1998

Comorbidity between headache and other disorders such as psychological or memory problems is a topic of increasing scientific interest both for us diagnostic and therapeutic implications but also for pathogenetic advances. A central neurogenic mechanism such as a dysregulation of some neurotransmitter system might underlie not only headache but also other coexistent disorders; findings highlight the role of serotonin pathways.

Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation play a pivotal role in pathomechanisms of brain ischemia. Our research aimed to formulate a nanotheranostic system for delivering carnosic acid as a neuroprotective agent with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties to ischemic brain tissue, mimicked by organotypic hippocampal cultures (OHCs) exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD). In the first part of this study, the nanocarriers were formulated by encapsulating two types of nanocores (nanoemulsion (AOT) and polymeric (PCL)) containing CA into multilayer shells using the sequential adsorption of charged nanoobjects method.

Background: Women with suspected coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) may be at higher risk of experiencing cognitive decline due to cerebral small vessel disease, a known contributor to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). A potential underlying mechanism that could accelerate this cognitive decline is the accumulation of brain tissue iron, which has been previously linked to changes in brain function potentially caused by oxidative stress and cell death. Therefore, we aim to elucidate whether a similar mechanism could affect women with suspected CMD by investigating the potential role of iron deposition on the brain's functional organization and its effect on cognition using advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Background: Biomarkers such as amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides and tau protein can correlate with changes in cognition and mood symptoms associated with AD. We aimed to investigate the blood biomarker response to a Kundalini Yoga (KY) compared to Memory Enhancement Training (MET) intervention as well as determine the predictive value of blood biomarkers on outcomes in a randomized trial targeting women at risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Method: Women aged 60 years old and older with subjective memory complaints and high cardiovascular risk score were randomized to a 12-week RCT of Kundalini yoga or Memory enhancement training (MET).

Background: Older African American (AA) and Hispanic American (HA) adults have a higher risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) than older non-Hispanic white (NHW) adults. Adverse experiences like stress and discrimination may contribute to the higher vascular disease burden observed in AA and HA persons. Cerebrovascular disease reflected by white matter hyperintensity (WMH) lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may affect ADRD risk in older AA and HA adults.

Background: Preventative interventions for cognitive decline are crucial as the number of individuals with Dementia is projected to reach 78 million by 2030. Cognitive Training can be a promising solution for the maintenance and improvement of neurocognitive functioning and has the potential to delay the onset of AD. This study utilizes a home-based gamified cognitive training, the Bird Watch Game Unity (BWGU), where participants engage aspects of cognitive control to focus on predictable and unpredictable probe-cue sequences of novel visual stimuli - pictures of birds.
