Aims: To determine the extent to which behavioural methods, used alone or with other methods of contraception, contribute to contraceptive failure in women seeking termination of pregnancy.
Method: A clinical audit was conducted of the use of behavioural methods of contraception, in 1342 women attending the Parkview Clinic for termination of pregnancy, over a four year period 1992-6. The information was obtained through standard interview and patient records.
Results: The women seen were representative of New Zealand women undergoing termination of pregnancy. Approximately one third of women (34.9%) used one or more behavioural methods in the month prior to conception. The two most common methods were periodic abstinence and coitus interruptus, both used by approximately 17%. Other methods used less frequently and not solely for contraceptive purposes, were cleansing of the vagina and breastfeeding. Pacific Island and Asian women were more likely to use behavioural methods than European and Maori women. Many women (45.6%) using behavioural methods also used other methods of contraception, especially the condom.
Conclusions: Behavioural methods were found more commonly than previously reported. Greater understanding of the use of behavioural methods will assist in the implementation of preventive programmes to reduce the number of terminations.

Wide bandgap semiconductor AlGaN alloys have been identified as key materials to fabricate solar-blind ultraviolet photodetectors (SBUV PDs). Herein, a self-driven SBUV polarization-sensitive PD (PSPD) based on semipolar (112̅2)-oriented AlGaN films is reported. Using the flow-rate modulation epitaxy method, the full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) for the obtained (112̅2) AlGaN along [112̅3̅] and [11̅00] rocking curves are 0.

Objective: Cognitive impairment (CI) is highly prevalent in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT pathway plays a critical role in neuronal survival in a variety of central nervous system injuries. This study aimed to determine whether electroacupuncture (EA) at and LI20 ameliorates SAH-CI in a rat model and to examine whether it modulates the PI3K/AKT pathway by administering a PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) versus dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) vehicle.

Trauma and Burns Unit, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, South Africa.
Background: Data on trauma burden and outcome varies amongst the nine South African Provinces. In Limpopo Province there is a paucity of data which this study aimed to quantify and characterise the severe trauma burden in the province.
Methods: A retrospective chart review for all patients with injury severity score (ISS) > 16 over a 6-year period (Jan 2015-Dec 2020) at two central hospitals in Limpopo province.

The conversion of a person's intentions into device commands through the use of brain-computer interface (BCI) is a feasible communication method for individuals with nervous system disorders. While common spatial pattern (CSP) is commonly used for feature extraction in BCIs, it has limitations. It is known for its susceptibility to noise and tendency to overfit.

Integrating microfluidic elements onto a single chip offers many advantages, including miniaturization, portability, and multifunctionality, making such systems highly useful for biomedical, healthcare, and sensing applications. However, these chips need redesigning for compatibility with microfluidic fabrication methods such as photolithography. To address this, we integrated microfluidics technology into our previously developed humidity-driven energy harvester to create a self-powered system and redesigned it so that it could be fabricated using photolithography and printing.
