Focal myopathy associated with chronic intramuscular injection of piritramide.

Published: December 1997

We report a patient in whom chronic intramuscular piritramide led to a focal fibrotic myopathy. Since piritramide myotoxicity has never been reported, we have studied its effect on rat skeletal muscle. Chronic intramuscular piritramide led to fibrous connective tissue replacement of rat skeletal muscle, similar to that found in the patient's muscle. Although the pathogenetic mechanism of piritramide myopathy is unclear, we caution against prolonged intramuscular use of piritramide to prevent this potentially debilitating adverse effect.

Article Synopsis
  • CAB + RPV is the first long-acting HIV treatment regimen using thigh injections, showing promising results in maintaining viral suppression.
  • The study involved 118 participants and compared pharmacokinetic changes and tolerability between thigh and gluteal injections, finding no significant differences in effectiveness.
  • Results indicated that a majority of participants preferred thigh injections, with potential plans for more flexible dosing schedules to enhance treatment convenience.

Depression and pain are common comorbidities in cancer patients, and ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, has shown potential in managing both. This review summarizes current literature on ketamine and its enantiomer, esketamine, in managing depression and pain in the oncologic population. Studies indicate that sub-anesthetic doses of intravenous ketamine and esketamine can alleviate postoperative depressive symptoms in cancer patients with a tolerable safety profile.

: is the leading cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric adenocarcinoma, and mucosal-associated lymphoma. Due to the emerging problems with antibiotic treatment against in clinical practice, vaccination has gained more interest. Oral immunization is considered a promising approach for preventing initial colonization of this bacterium in the gastrointestinal tract, establishing a first line of defense at gastric mucosal surfaces.

Background: MRI offers quantification of proton density fat fraction (PDFF) and tissue characteristics with T1 mapping. The influence of age, sex, and the potential confounding effects of fat on T1 values in skeletal muscle in healthy adults are insufficiently known.

Purpose: To determine the accuracy and repeatability of a saturation-recovery chemical-shift encoded multiparametric approach (SR-CSE) for quantification of T1 and muscle fat content, and establish normative values (age, sex) from a healthy cohort.

The athlete's paradox phenomenon involves the accumulation of intramuscular triglycerides (IMTG) in both insulin-resistant and insulin-sensitive endurance athletes. Nevertheless, a complete understanding of this phenomenon is yet to be achieved. Recent research indicates that lactate, a common byproduct of physical activity, may increase the accumulation of IMTG in skeletal muscle.
