γ-Secretase mediates amyloid production in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and oncogenic activity of Notch. γ-Secretase inhibitors (GSIs) are thus of interest for AD and oncology. A peripheral biomarker of Notch activity would aid determination of the therapeutic window and dosing regimen for GSIs, given toxicities associated with chronic Notch inhibition.

Benzene exposure and risk of lymphohaematopoietic cancers in 25 000 offshore oil industry workers.

Br J Cancer

April 2015

Department of Research, Cancer Registry of Norway, P.O. Box 5313 Majorstuen, Oslo N-0304, Norway.

Background: The aim of this work was to examine the risk of lymphohaematopoietic (LH) cancer according to benzene exposure among offshore workers.

Methods: Cancer registry data were used to identify 112 cancer cases diagnosed during 1999-2011 in a cohort of 24 917 Norwegian men reporting offshore work between 1965 and 1999. Analyses were conducted according to a stratified case-cohort design with a reference subcohort of 1661 workers.

Environmental and occupational exposure to chemicals and telomere length in human studies.

Postgrad Med J

December 2013

Department of Preventive Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, , Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Telomeres are complexes of tandem repeats of DNA (5'-TTAGGG-3') and protein that cap eukaryotic chromosomes and play a critical role in chromosome stability. Telomeres shorten with aging and this process can be accelerated by increased oxidative stress and episodes of inflammation. Evidence is rapidly growing that telomere length (TL) may be affected by environmental chemicals that have frequently been associated with chronic diseases.

This study investigated the hypnotic, anti-convulsant and anxiolytic effects of 1-nitro-2-phenylethane (BPNE) obtained from the oil of Dennettia tripetala G. Baker (Annonaceae) and established its mechanism of action. The essential oil (EO) from the leaf, fruit and seed was obtained by hydrodistillation, followed by isolation of BPNE purified to 99.
