Obtaining high-quality nucleic acid extracted from seaweeds is notoriously difficult due to contamination with polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds after cell disruption. Specific methods need to be employed for RNA isolation in different seaweed species, and therefore studies of the thiamine biosynthesis pathway have been limited. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by the tick-borne SFTS bunyavirus (SFTSV) resulting in a high fatality rate up to 30%. SFTSV is a negative-strand RNA virus containing three single-stranded RNA genome segments designated as L, M, and S, which respectively, encode the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), glycoproteins Gn and Gc, and nucleoprotein (N) and non-structural proteins (NSs). NSs can form inclusion bodies (IBs) in infected and transfected cells.

Samples of leaves exhibiting symptoms resembling those caused by virus infection were collected from ornamental street flowers in a rural town in Western Australia. Thirty-seven leaf samples were collected from plants of iris, tulip, lily, daffodil, stock and grape hyacinth. Shotgun sequencing of cDNA derived from leaf samples was done, and analysis showed that about 6% of the sequences obtained were of viral origin.

The wild boar is an ancestor of the domestic pig and an important game species with the widest geographical range of all ungulates. Although a large amount of data are available on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) variability in domestic pigs, only a few studies have been performed on wild boars. Due to their crucial role in appropriate immune responses and extreme polymorphism, MHC genes represent some of the best candidates for studying the processes of adaptive evolution.
