Slices and homogenates from rat cerebral cortex were used to study the effect of hypoxia, with or without hypocapnia, on phosphatidylethanolamine synthesis. The incorporation of [1-3H]ethanolamine into the corresponding phospholipid was greatest in slices treated with pure nitrogen, intermediate when the nitrogen contained 5% CO2, and least in slices treated with 95% O2-5% CO2. The role of hypocapnia in reinforcing the effect due to hypoxia did not require the integrity of the cell because similar results were obtained by treating homogenates with pure nitrogen or nitrogen plus 5% CO2. In both cases the synthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine was abolished by the addition of EGTA and the degradation of newly synthesized phospholipid by phospholipases was similar to that obtained in controls. When the homogenate was not buffered, changes in the pH due to experimental treatment influenced the response to Ca2+ and to hypoxia plus hypocapnia. Intracellular calcium ions are thought to play a role in the response of cerebrocortical slices to N2-treatment. In fact, although the incorporation was greater in complete medium that contains 2 mM Ca2+ than in the same medium prepared without the addition of this ion, the relative increase of incorporation due to N2-treatment was greater in the medium lacking added Ca2+.

Central sleep apneas (CSA) can occur de novo at high-altitude in individuals without sleep-disordered breathing at low altitude. These apneas are usually brief, lasting only 5-15 s. This report presents the first documented case of a man experiencing extreme altitude-induced CSA lasting more than 100 s in the absence of any sleep breathing disorder in normoxia.

The retina allows noninvasive in vivo assessment of the microcirculation. Autoregulation of the retinal microvasculature meets the changing requirements of local metabolic demand and maintains adequate blood flow. Analysis of the retinal vascular reactivity contributes to the understanding of regulatory physiology and its relationship to the systemic microcirculation.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to identify the incidence of common perioperative anaesthetic complications in cats undergoing anaesthesia for neutering in three UK first opinion practices.
Methods: A retrospective anaesthetic record analysis was performed on cats anaesthetised for neutering at practices 1 and 2 between 9 December 2017 and 2 February 2021 and practice 3 between 9 March 2020 and 7 January 2021. A search of the practice management system identified all cats that had undergone neutering in the selected timeframe.

Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) in burn patients is an under-diagnosed and potentially serious complication. Its incidence varies according to studies performed. This retrospective and descriptive study conducted in an intensive burn care department in Tunisia over a period of 22 months (January 1, 2021 to October 30, 2022) included 24 patients who presented a thromboembolic complication among a total of 785 admissions (incidence of 3%): pulmonary embolism in 15 cases and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in 9 cases.
