Background: Chronic hard-to-heal wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure ulcers, present significant safety concerns, patient burdens, and challenges to health care systems globally.

Objective: To review the mechanism of action and clinical function of bromelain-based enzymatic debridement (BBD) in the context of wound care, focusing on the mechanism of action of BBD and its formulation for chronic wounds in particular.

Methods: A literature review was conducted to assess both bromelain's mechanism of action as well as clinical and preclinical studies on the use of BBD, searching the PubMed and Google Scholar databases for articles published between November 1992 and July 2024.

Proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) are heterobifunctional molecules that target undruggable proteins, enhance selectivity and prevent target accumulation through catalytic activity. The unique structure of PROTACs presents challenges in structural identification and drug design. Liquid chromatography (LC), combined with mass spectrometry (MS), enhances compound annotation by providing essential retention time (RT) data, especially when MS alone is insufficient.

Tenderness in meat and meat alternatives: Structural and processing fundamentals.

Compr Rev Food Sci Food Saf

January 2025

Department of Food Science, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst, Massachusetts, USA.

The demand for meat alternatives based on ingredients sourced from nonanimal materials with equivalent quality of muscle tissue is increasing. As more consumers switch to meat alternatives, a growing body of research has investigated the tenderness and related texture attributes in plant-based meats to increase consumer acceptance. A deeper understanding of tenderness including the differences and similarities between meat and meat alternatives is crucial to developing products that meet consumer expectations, as it directly influences consumer acceptance.

The monoclonal antibody 17E1 selectively labels GFAP in 5xFAD mice.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Sanders‐Brown Center on Aging, Lexington, KY, USA

Background: Our lab recently developed 2 mouse monoclonal antibodies that preferentially react with “distressed astrocytes”. One monoclonal, 26A6, was found to react preferentially with a form of the Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein phosphatase, calcineurin (CN), that has been cleaved by calpain, to generate a 48 kDa CN fragment (∆CN). We recently published a characterization of this antibody.

Background: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is accountable for the leading case of dementia in elder people. Before, only symptomatic treatments are available for AD. Since 2021, two anti‐amyloid antibodies aducanumab and lecanemab have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
