Numerous unregulated organic compounds (UOCs) including pharmaceuticals, opioids, and personal care products (PCPs) end up in wastewater. UOC presence in biosolids (a wastewater treatment byproduct), which are applied to soil for different reasons raises environmental and health risk concerns. In this study, two multi-class extraction methods were developed and validated to target 111 UOCs from 8 different major families simultaneously in biosolids and biosolids-impacted soil.

This work represents different spectrophotometric techniques for concurrent quantification of Indacaterol (IND) and Mometasone furoate (MOM); co-formulated inhalation capsules to control asthma symptoms. Direct spectrophotometric (D) approach was applied for IND assay. While, absorption factor (AF), ratio difference (RD), mean centering of the ratio spectra (MC), and continuous wavelet transform (CW) techniques were utilized for MOM quantification.

A novel analytical method was designed and developed that exhibited ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), fluorescence (FL), and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) signals for straightforward and comprehensive determination of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) using polyethylenimine-functionalized silver nanoparticles (PEI-Ag NPs). Through a facile one-step experiment, and NaOH assisted, in an aqueous solution of 100 ℃ for 40 min PEI reacted with AgNO to generate PEI-Ag NPs with a yellow color and weak blue fluorescence. Interestingly, phenylacetaldehyde (PAA), a specific product of MAO-B, causes significant enhancement of the three optical signals of UV-Vis, FL, and RRS.

High-throughput screening to identify endocrine disruptors: Contribution of low-resolution tandem MS and high-resolution MS.

Anal Chim Acta

February 2025

Univ Rennes, Inserm, EHESP, Irset (Institut de recherche en santé, environnement et travail) - UMR_S 1085, F-35000, Rennes, France.

Background: Considering the large diversity of chemicals present in the environment and the need to study their effects (alone or as mixtures), the development of high-throughput in vitro assays in line with the Replacement, Reduction, Refinement (3R) strategy is essential for chemical risk assessments.

Results: We developed a robust analytical workflow based on both low resolution tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to quantify 13 steroids in NCI-H295R cell culture medium, human plasma and serum. The workflow was validated by screening media from the NCI-H295R cell line exposed in dose-response experiments to 5 endocrine disruptors (EDs) such as bisphenol A, prochloraz, ketoconazole, atrazine and forskolin.

Dried blood spot (DBS) assays to quantify novel and repurposed drugs for the treatment of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) would facilitate pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring in low-middle income settings, considering their ease of application and simple sample storage requirements. We describe a DBS method for the simultaneous quantification of bedaquiline and metabolite N-desmethyl bedaquiline, linezolid, levofloxacin, and clofazimine. The analytes were extracted from the matrix and isolated by solid-phase extraction.
