Article Abstract

A survey for constant region gamma-chain allotypes (de locus) was undertaken in different lagomorph genera. As yet only Pronolagus rupestris, a paleolaginae, showed the presence of a determinant similar to rabbit d12 although it lacked the widespread e15 determinant. All seven individuals possessed the d12 like determinant which was studied by immunodiffusion, haemagglutination inhibition, radiobinding and binding inhibition assays. In addition, a new enzymic method for typing for d12, based on the presence of the asymmetric rabbit hinge carbohydrate linked to the d12 characteristic threonine, is presented. This method suggests, however, that, unlike the d12 rabbit, Pronolagus does not seem to have a majority of IgG molecules with a glycosylated hinge.

In order to elucidate the systematic relevance of the turbinal skeleton in Lagomorpha the ethmoidal regions of 6 ochotonid, 21 leporid, and 2 outgroup species (Sciurus vulgaris, Tupaia sp.) species were investigated by high-resolution computed tomography (μCT). Number and shape of turbinals correspond to major clades and to several genera.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to define homologous segments among representatives of 7 of the 11 recognized leporid genera. Chromosome painting using 22 rabbit chromosome-specific paints derived from flow-sorted chromosomes revealed that at least 18 fusions and six fissions differentiate the extant karyotypes from the presumed ancestral state (2n = 48). The riverine rabbit, Bunolagus monticularis, has the most derived karyotype, differing from the ancestor by seven fusions and five fissions, followed by Pronolagus rupestris, with four fusions and one fission.

Mitochondrial DNA sequence data derived from two genes were used to infer phylogeographical relationships between 13 Agama atra populations. Three distinct geographical assemblages were found among the lizard populations. The first occurs in southern Namibia, the second is restricted to the western dry arid regions of South Africa, whereas the third is distributed throughout the more mesic southern and eastern parts of the subcontinent.

In addition, caracal (Felis caracal) from the park and its vicinity as well as from the Graaff-Reinet region of the Karoo were examined.
