9-(beta-D-1,3-Dioxolan-4-yl)guanine (DXG) exhibits potent antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) in vitro. However, since DXG possesses limited aqueous solubility, a more water soluble prodrug of DXG, 9-(beta-D-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)-2-aminopurine (APD), was synthesized. The purpose of this study was to characterize the pharmacokinetics of APD and its antiviral metabolite DXG in mice. Female NIH-Swiss mice were administered 100 mg/kg APD intravenously or orally. Serum, brain and liver were collected at selected times following prodrug administration and concentrations of APD and DXG were determined by HPLC. APD was efficiently converted to parent nucleoside DXG following both intravenous and oral administration. Biotransformation of APD to DXG likely occurs in the liver and is mediated by xanthine oxidase. Similar pharmacokinetic profiles for DXG were observed following either route of administration in serum, liver and brain. These results demonstrate that APD appears to be a promising prodrug for the delivery of DXG.

Traumatic multidrug-resistant bacterial infections are the most threat to wound healing. Lower extremity wounds under diabetic conditions display a significant delay during the healing process. To overcome these challenges, the utilization of protein-based nanocomposite dressings is crucial in implementing a successful regenerative medicine approach.

Introduction: We compared three operational case definitions of mild behavioral impairment (MBI) in the context of MBI prevalence estimates and dementia risk modeling.
Methods: Participants were dementia-free older adults ( = 13701) from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center. Operational case definitions of MBI were generated based on neuropsychiatric symptoms at one (OV), two-consecutive (TCV), or more than two-thirds (TTV) of dementia-free study visits.

To get rid of the chrome pollution faced by the leather industry, we explored a novel engineering high-quality eco-leather technology based on the synergistic interactions between biomass-based aldehydes and Al(III). Firstly, dialdehyde xanthan gum (DXG) was prepared to covalently crosslink with the collagen fibers (CFs) via Schiff-base linkages under alkaline conditions, endowing the leather with a shrinkage temperature (Ts) of 80 °C and opening channels for the subsequent penetration of Al species (AL). Secondly, and for this latter purpose, the DXG-tanned leather was acidified to release part of the DXG from the leather according to the dynamic nature of the Schiff-base.

Cartilage or bone regeneration approaches based on the direct injection of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) at the lesion site encounter several challenges, related to uncontrolled cell spreading and differentiation, reduced cell viability and poor engrafting. This work presents a simple and versatile strategy based on the synergic combination of in-situ forming hydrogels and spheroids of adipose stem cells (SASCs) with great potential for minimally invasive regenerative interventions aimed to threat bone and cartilage defects. Aqueous dispersions of partially degalactosylated xyloglucan (dXG) are mixed with SASCs derived from liposuction and either a chondroinductive or an osteoinductive medium.
