Low-density lipoprotein ability to generate lipoperoxides in healthy subjects: variations according to age.

Published: October 1997

Oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are recognized to be involved in atherosclerosis development. Since the plasma oxidized LDL assay is inadequate because of the short half-lives of LDLs, measurement of the in vitro ability of LDLs to generate lipoperoxides (LDL-GLs) has been preferred. The present study displays a profile of LDL-GLs in a group of 175 healthy subjects, using a method to measure thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances. We have observed an increased LDL-GL level according to age.

Complete shielding of multivitamins to reduce toxic peroxides in the parenteral nutrition (C-SMART-PN): A randomized controlled pilot study.

Department of Nutrition, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine Research Center, Université de Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Background: When exposed to ambient light, parenteral nutrition (PN) contamination with peroxides almost doubles, which increases oxidative stress in preterm infants, contributing to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) recommends complete PN photoprotection to reduce peroxide contamination and optimize its integrity but acknowledges the challenges of its implementation. In this study, a novel photoprotection procedure was tested for its effectiveness in reducing peroxide load and limiting ascorbic acid degradation, and for its feasibility and effectiveness in reducing urinary peroxide levels in preterm infants.

This study evaluated the antioxidant efficacy of ellagitannins from a pomegranate husk in preventing vegetable canola oil (VCO) oxidation during French fry preparation. Ellagitannins were extracted using 80% acetone, purified via Amberlite XAD-16 resin chromatography, and incorporated into VCO at 0.05%, 0.

A Dual-Targeting Biomimetic Nanoplatform Integrates SDT/CDT/Gas Therapy to Boost Synergistic Ferroptosis for Orthotopic Hepatocellular Carcinoma Therapy.

The development of efficient therapeutic strategies to promote ferroptotic cell death offers significant potential for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. Herein, this study presents an HCC-targeted nanoplatform that integrates bimetallic FeMoO nanoparticles with CO-releasing molecules, and further camouflaged with SP94 peptide-modified macrophage membrane for enhanced ferroptosis-driven multi-modal therapy of HCC. Leveraging the multi-enzyme activities of the multivalent metallic elements, the nanoplatform not only decomposes HO to generate oxygen and alleviate tumor hypoxia but also depletes glutathione to inactivate glutathione peroxides 4, which amplify sonodynamic therapy and ferroptotic tumor death under ultrasound (US) irradiation.

Ferroptosis, a novel form of cell death discovered in recent years, is typically accompanied by significant iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation during the process. This article systematically elucidates how tumor metabolic reprogramming affects the ferroptosis process in tumor cells. The paper outlines the basic concepts and physiological significance of tumor metabolic reprogramming and ferroptosis, and delves into the specific regulatory mechanisms of glucose metabolism, protein metabolism, and lipid metabolism on ferroptosis.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a growing global health epidemic and is the leading cause of cardiovascular health problems, including ischemic stroke, coronary artery disease, and peripheral vascular disease. Despite extensive research on the underlying mechanisms of AS, iron remains an under-investigated mediator in the atherosclerotic process. Iron's involvement in AS is primarily linked to the iron-induced programmed cell death process known as ferroptosis.
