Human populations are experiencing unprecedented growth and longevity with lingering knowledge gaps of the characteristics, mechanisms, and pathologies of senescence. Invasive measurements and long-term control conditions for longitudinal studies are infeasible, necessitating the need for surrogate animal models. Rats have short lifespans (2-3 years) with translatable cardiovascular systems, and Sprague Dawley microcirculatory preparations are key to studying the oxygen transport mechanisms critical to the loss of skeletal muscle function in aging.

The prevalence of heatwave and hypoxia events and their devastating impacts on aquatic ecosystems and fishery resources reinforces the priority of research to address the resilience and adaption mechanisms to these two stressors in important fish species. However, our understanding of the development of cross-tolerance of these two stressors in fish still limited. Here, we investigated the impacts of prior heatwave exposure on hypoxia tolerance and the underlying mechanisms in silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), a species of considerable ecological and commercial importance.

Purpose: Hypoxemia is a risk factor for mortality and long-term neuropsychological impairment during severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) is a potential treatment for such cases but may not suffice. We aimed to evaluate the effects of pharmacological interventions for cardiac output (CO) control using ivabradine or beta-blockers for refractory hypoxemia during VV-ECMO.

The placenta plays a pivotal role in fetal development and the dam's subsequent lactation performance, because it facilitates nutrient transfer, heat dissipation, and gas exchange with the growing fetus, and regulates key hormones essential for mammary gland development. Heat stress experienced during gestation and lactation can significantly reduce the placenta's capacity to perform these critical functions. To investigate the impact of heat stress, trials were conducted over the summer months of 2020, 2022, and 2023 in Florida.

Understanding how ecological, environmental and geographic features influence population genetic patterns provides crucial insights into a species' evolutionary history, as well as their vulnerability or resilience under climate change. In the Southern Ocean, population genetic variation is influenced across multiple spatial scales ranging from circum-Antarctic, which encompasses the entire continent, to regional, with varying levels of geographic separation. However, comprehensive analyses testing the relative importance of different environmental and geographic variables on genomic variation across these scales are generally lacking in the Southern Ocean.
