Purpose: To evaluate the biocompatibility of three poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different surface properties.

Setting: University Eye Clinic, Vienna, Austria.

Methods: Cell reactions on the surfaces of unmodified, heparin-surface-modified (HSM), and surface-passivated (SP) PMMA IOLs were documented in vivo using a Zeiss specular microscope. Risk factors for such reactions were also determined.

Results: During the first postoperative days, small round and spindle-shaped cells were found on all IOLs. Cell density was higher in eyes with increased postoperative inflammation. After several days, epithelioid and foreign-body giant cells were seen on some IOLs. Cells appeared significantly less often on the IOLs with hydrophilic surfaces (HSM) than on those with hydrophobic surfaces (unmodified, SP).

Conclusion: The significantly lower incidence of foreign-body reactions on hydrophilic than on hydrophobic IOL surfaces is consistent with the results of previous studies on hydrogel and silicone IOLs.

Efficient synthesis of coumarin based triazole linked O-glycoconjugates as new bio-active glycohybrids.

Carbohydr Res

January 2025

Glycochemistry Laboratory, School of Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, 110067, India. Electronic address:

Glycohybrids are biologically significant molecules with variety of biological functions and are found as structural motifs in numerous natural products. Here, we report the synthesis of various new coumarin-based O-glycoconjugates as glycohybrids that are chirally enriched and bridged by 1,2,3-triazoles ring system. The1,2,3-triazoles bridging was done via CuAAC click-chemistry.

An involvement of a new zinc finger protein PbrZFP719 into pear self-incompatibility reaction.

Plant Cell Rep

State Key Laboratory of Crop Genetics and Germplasm Enhancement, Saya Institute of Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, 211800, China.

This study indicated that the CCHC-type zinc finger protein PbrZFP719 involves into self-incompatibility by affecting the levels of reactive oxygen species and cellulose content at the tips of pollen tubes. S-RNase-based self-incompatibility (SI) facilitates cross-pollination and prevents self-pollination, which in turn increases the costs associated with artificial pollination in fruit crops. Self S-RNase exerts its inhibitory effects on pollen tube growth by altering cell structures and components, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and cellulose content.

Recently, 3-D porous architecture of the composites play a key role in cell proliferation, bone regeneration, and anticancer activities. The osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties of β-TCP allow for the complete repair of numerous bone defects. Herein, β-TCP was synthesized by wet chemical precipitation route, and their 3-D porous composites with HBO and Cu nanoparticles were prepared by the solid-state reaction method with improved mechanical and biological performances.

Cell-free DNA release following psychosocial and physical stress in women and men.

Transl Psychiatry

January 2025

Department of Genetic Psychology, Faculty of Psychology, Ruhr-University Bochum, Universitätsstraße 150, Bochum, Germany.

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is continuously shed by all cells in the body, but the regulation of this process and its physiological functions are still largely unknown. Previous research has demonstrated that both nuclear (cf-nDNA) and mitochondrial (cf-mtDNA) cfDNA levels increase in plasma in response to acute psychosocial and physical stress in males. This study further investigated these findings by testing 31 female participants (16 using oral hormonal contraception and 15 not using oral hormonal contraception), and the results were subsequently compared with those of 16 male participants.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) hold great promise in the practical deployment of solid lithium batteries (SLBs) owing to their high voltage stability but suffer from poor stability against Li-metal. Herein, a poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL)-graphitic CN (g-CN, i.e.
