Crescents and CKD progression in diabetic nephropathy.

Med Clin (Barc)

January 2025

China-Japan Friendship Hospital (Institute of Clinical Medical Sciences), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100029, China; Department of Nephrology, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Beijing 100029, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Crescents play important roles in the pathophysiology of patients with biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, their relationship to disease severity and progression has not been fully clarified.

Methods: We assessed 142 participants in a retrospective cohort study of biopsy-proven DN.

Increasing evidence supports the role of an augmented immune response in the early development and progression of renal complications caused by diabetes. We recently demonstrated that podocyte-specific expression of stress response protein regulated in development and DNA damage response 1 (REDD1) contributes to activation of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-κB in the kidney of diabetic mice. The studies here were designed to define the specific signaling events whereby REDD1 promotes NF-κB activation in the context of diabetic nephropathy.

Quercetin (QE), a particular flavonoid, is well known for its medicinal effects, including anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this review, the findings of QE effects on diabetes STZinduced, alloxan-induced, and its complications have been summarized with a particular focus on in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials. Consequently, QE mediates several mechanisms, including ameliorating tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and IL-10 expression, increasing insulin glucose uptake to inhibit insulin resistance.

Evaluation of parotid and submandibular salivary glands with ultrasonography in diabetic patients.

Clin Oral Investig

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Zonguldak Bulent Ecevıt University, Zonguldak, Turkey.

Objectives: The main symptom of diabetes mellitus (DM) is hyperglycaemia, and patients with DM often have microvascular complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy; macrovascular complications, such as coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease and cerebrovascular disease; and oral complications, such as xerostomia, hyposalivation and periodontal disease. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the submandibular and parotid glands in type 2 DM patients and healthy individuals and to determine the changes in the salivary glands caused by diabetes.

Materials And Methods: In this study, the salivary glands of 100 patients (50 individuals with type 2 DM and 50 healthy individuals) were evaluated by ultrasonography (US).

The coexistence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a significant global health challenge, contributing to substantial morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. T2DM is the leading cause of CKD, and CKD exacerbates diabetes-related complications, creating a bidirectional relationship driven by oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), affecting some individuals with T2DM, accelerates progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and increases cardiovascular mortality.
