Structures of the O-specific polysaccharide chains of lipopolysaccharides from Proteus group OX strains (serogroups O1-O3) used as antigens in Weil-Felix test for diagnosis of rickettsiosis, were established. From them, the acid-labile polysaccharide of Proteus vulgaris OX19 (O1) is built up of the following branched pentasaccharide repeating units connected via a phosphate group: [structure in text] where QuiNAc stands for 2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxyglucose (N-acetylquinovosamine). The basis of serospecificity of the Proteus group OX antigens and their cross-reactivity with human anti-rickettsial antibodies is discussed.

To assess the role of enterotoxigenic (ETEC), verotoxigenic (VTEC), and necrotoxigenic (NTEC) Escherichia coli in cattle with diarrhea, 1,524 colonies of E coli isolated from 197 calves with diarrhea and from 112 healthy controls were investigated for production of heat-labile and heat-stable enterotoxins, verotoxins, and cytotoxic necrotizing factors (CNF1 and CNF2). The ETEC were isolated from only 2 (1%) calves with diarrhea and from 5 (4%) healthy controls. In contrast, VTEC and NTEC that produced CNF2 were frequently identified.

The serogroups of 396 necrotizing Escherichia coli of human and bovine origin isolated in Spain between 1979 and 1991 have been determined. The 270 cytotoxic necrotizing factor strains belonged to 22 different O serogroups; however, 84% (226 of 270) were of one of seven serogroups (O2, O4, O6, O14, O22, O75 and O83). Although necrotizing E.

Sera from 100 patients not infected with Serratia marcescens at the time of hospital admission lacked detectable H-immobilizing antibodies against all 20 currently recognized H-antigens of this microorganism. However, various patient sera revealed elevated titers of O-agglutinins against several of the 20 O-antigens of S. marcescens, in a particular O-antigens, O1, O3, O4, O5, O7, O8, O10, O11, O16, O17, O18, O19, and O20.
