Ultrasound is routinely used in many medical applications. Concern for the safety of subjects undergoing investigations has led to the development of systems to quantify the acoustic output of such devices. One system, the NPL ultrasound beam calibrator, uses a multi-element hydrophone to determine rapidly the temporal and spatial characteristics of the acoustic output. When investigating pulsed systems it is necessary to synchronise data acquisition with the launch of the acoustic pulse, a procedure that currently can be both time consuming and difficult. This article examines the feasibility of using an alternative, optical approach, generating a trigger signal in response to the changes in refractive index associated with propagation of the acoustic pulse.

A solution method to improve an anechoic chamber at low frequencies with the use of active noise control is presented. The approach uses the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral to compute the reflected sound field resulting from the primary sources together with an algorithm to compute the filter coefficients of a controller driving secondary sources on the walls of the enclosure using reference signals as inputs, which are measured on a contour enclosing the primary sources. A causal frequency domain method with conjugate gradient iterations is derived to determine the controller.

Wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) and noise reduction both play important roles in hearing aids. WDRC provides level-dependent amplification so that the level of sound produced by the hearing aid falls between the hearing threshold and the highest comfortable level of the listener, while noise reduction reduces ambient noise with the goal of improving intelligibility and listening comfort and reducing effort. In most current hearing aids, noise reduction and WDRC are implemented sequentially, but this may lead to distortion of the amplitude modulation patterns of both the speech and the noise.

A Hz level narrow linewidth all-optical microwave oscillator based on the torsional radial acoustic modes (TR) of a single-mode fiber (SMF) is proposed and validated. The all-optical microwave oscillator consists of a 20 km SMF main ring cavity and a 5 km SMF sub ring cavity. The main ring cavity provides forward stimulated Brillouin scattering gain and utilizes a nonlinear polarization rotation effect to achieve TR mode locking.

Background: The role of left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and outcomes such as low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS) is not well established. The authors investigated the relationship between LVGLS before and after induction of anesthesia, their differences, and their relationship with LCOS and other outcomes.
