This study deals with the problem of distribution of the 46 centromeres on the human metaphase plate after treatment with colchicine and hypotonic shock. The location of the centromeres was recorded for 400 metaphases in which the chromosomes were identified by bands. A quantitative analysis of chromosome distribution ascertains the absence of proximities between homologous chromosomes. The already known ones between acrocentric chromosomes are found at a very high level. The nature and intensity of these proximities vary from one sample to another as is the case between heterologues. A three-dimensional graphic technique is proposed to summarize all of the interchromosome proximities.

During mitosis, chromosomes condense, align to form a metaphase plate and segregate to the two daughter cells. Mitosis is one of the most complex recurring transformations in the life of a cell and requires a high degree of reliability to ensure the error-free transmission of genetic information to the next cell generation. An abnormally prolonged mitosis indicates potential defects that compromise genomic integrity.

Cultured pluripotent stem cells are unique in being the only fully diploid immortal human cell lines. However, during continued culture they can acquire significant chromosome abnormalities. Chromosome 12 trisomy is the most common whole-chromosome abnormality found during culture of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Acentric chromosome congression and alignment on the metaphase plate via kinetochore-independent forces in Drosophila.

Chromosome congression and alignment on the metaphase plate involves lateral and microtubule plus-end interactions with the kinetochore. Here we take advantage of our ability to efficiently generate a GFP-marked acentric X chromosome fragment in Drosophila neuroblasts to identify forces acting on chromosome arms that drive congression and alignment. We find acentrics efficiently congress and align on the metaphase plate, often more rapidly than kinetochore-bearing chromosomes.

Background: Genetic alterations have important roles in cancer development and progression. (spindle and kinetochore associated complex subunit 2) is a mitotic component that plays a critical role in maintaining the silence of the metaphase plate and spindle checkpoint. However, the exact role of in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear.

Plants (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Van Yuzuncu Yil University, 65090 Van, Türkiye.

A new hexaploid cytotype of has been identified in Türkiye. To assess the ploidy levels of native populations, 50 samples from Adıyaman, Batman, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, Mardin, Siirt, Şanlıurfa, Şırnak, and Van were analyzed using flow cytometry and cytogenetic techniques. DNA content was determined by comparison with standard plants.
