Continuous plasma resin perfusion for detoxification of methotrexate.

Eur J Pediatr

Klinik mit Poliklinik für Kinder und Jugendliche, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany.

Published: July 1997

Unlabelled: Acute renal failure is a rare but very severe side-effect of methotrexate (MTX) treatment requiring extracorporeal detoxification. A new detoxification regime, consisting of a haemodiafiltration (HDF) and continuous plasma resin perfusion (PRP) over anion exchange resin column with high affinity for MTX, was used for treatment of MTX-induced acute renal failure in a 2-year-old boy with medulloblastoma. More than 99% of MTX was removed from plasma by perfusion over the resin column resulting in a marked decrease of MTX plasma half-life. No haematological complications occurred.

Conclusion: The use of PRP alone or in combination with HDF is a new and effective treatment strategy for extracorporeal detoxification of MTX.

Ghrelin suppresses water intake with a different physiological significance from atrial natriuretic peptide in conscious seawater-acclimated eels.

J Exp Biol

January 2025

Laboratory of Physiology, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo, 5-1-5, Kashiwanoha, Kashiwa, Chiba, 277-8564, Japan.

In general, ghrelin is known as one of the orexigenic hormones in mammals. On the other hand, it has been shown that ghrelin inhibits water intake, which appear to be inconsistent with its role in the feeding response. In this study, the effect of ghrelin on water intake was comprehensively addressed using conscious seawater-acclimated eels known as an experimental model for water drinking behaviour.

Introduction: The effect and mechanism of skipping breakfast on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Asian-Indians is unknown.

Methods: Cross-over, within-group study recruiting 5 habitual breakfast eaters (BE) and 5 habitual breakfast skippers (BS) with uncontrolled T2DM (HbA1c 7-9%). Patients underwent testing after three days of following their usual breakfast habits and after seven days of crossing over to the other arm.

Integration of circulating tumor DNA in biliary tract cancer: the emerging landscape.

Hepat Oncol

December 2024

Gastrointestinal Malignancies Section, Thoracic & GI Malignancies Branch, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA.

Precision medicine has emerged as a cornerstone in cancer treatment revolutionizing our approach across malignancies. Molecular profiling of biliary tract cancers (BTCs) has changed the treatment landscape positively by prolonging survival in an aggressively fatal malignancy in its advanced stages. The acquisition of tissue tumor DNA for genomic analysis in BTC is often anatomically challenging, limited by quantity and quality.

Optimal adaptation to resistance exercise requires maximal rates of myofibrillar protein synthesis (MyoPS), which can be achieved by postexercise consumption of >20 g of protein or ~2 g of the essential amino acid (EAA) leucine. These nutritional recommendations are based on studies in males. The aim of the present study was to compare the postexercise MyoPS response to nutrition in young females.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pre-conditioning exercise on body lipid metabolism, leptin secretion, and the downstream pathways at the early stage of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Materials And Methods: The T2DM model was established using an 8-week high-sugar, high-fat diet combined. The T2DM model was established using an 8-week high-sugar, high-fat diet combined with streptozocin (STZ) injection.
