The unprecedented technical and technological evolution in thyroid surgery has labelled it as an extremely safe and efficient procedure, and indeed "typifies perhaps better than any other operation the supreme triumph of the surgeon's art."-William Halsted, 1852-1922. Surgeon's experience reflected by annual case load is the most important denominator in thyroid surgery.

The Public Health Leader Who Brought Antisepsis to William Halsted.

J Am Coll Surg

December 2024

Independent Scholar, Tucson, AZ.

William Halsted wrote to aging surgeon, Stephen Smith, in 1919, that he remembered the lessons Smith had taught him, "when I walked with you through the wards of Bellevue Hospital." Smith was an early advocate of Joseph Lister's antiseptic method, and because of his public health work, he was also an early advocate of environmental hygiene and microbial control based on the unproved germ theory. Although Lister's work at the time emphasized germ killing around the operative site with carbolic acid (antisepsis), Smith adopted and encouraged surgical practices at Bellevue that would be hallmarks of the germ-preventing (asepsis) surgical approach that fully developed after German bacteriologic discoveries in the mid-1880s, and with which Halsted is historically identified.

Normal and Diseased Imaging: Ultrasound/MRI.

Clin Podiatr Med Surg

July 2022

Stamford Health Medical Group, 800 Boston Post Road, Suite 302, Darien, CT 06820, USA.

The lesser metatarsophalangeal joint plantar plate and calcaneonavicular (spring) ligament are highly specialized soft tissue structures within the foot, consisting partly of fibrocartilage and capable of withstanding high compressive and tensile loads. Preoperative advanced imaging, in the form of point-of-care ultrasound and MRI, has become indispensable for surgeons hoping to confirm, quantify, and better localize injuries to these structures before surgery. This article describes the technical considerations of ultrasound and MRI and provides examples of the normal and abnormal appearances of these structures.
