Variation in the proteins produced by animal viruses allows the virus to reinfect the same host, but is constrained by the requirement to maintain critical viral functions, in particular engagement with cellular receptors. The fundamental characteristics of proteins and their interactions with each other suggest that this may not be so much of a constraint at all.

Host RNA-Binding Proteins as Regulators of HIV-1 Replication.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are cellular factors involved in every step of RNA metabolism. During HIV-1 infection, these proteins are key players in the fine-tuning of viral and host cellular and molecular pathways, including (but not limited to) viral entry, transcription, splicing, RNA modification, translation, decay, assembly, and packaging, as well as the modulation of the antiviral response. Targeted studies have been of paramount importance in identifying and understanding the role of RNA-binding proteins that bind to HIV-1 RNAs.

Plant viruses have been known to alter host metabolites that influence the attraction of insect vectors. Our study investigated whether (CYVCV) infection influences vector attractiveness, focusing on the citrus whitefly, (Ashmead). Free choice assays showed that citrus whiteflies exhibited a preference for settling on CYVCV-infected lemon plants versus healthy control plants.

Background: The optimal application of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in treating gestational diabetes remains uncertain. MNT involves individualised nutrition assessment and counselling, which is labour-intensive and is not the sole type of intervention offered by clinical dietitians.

Objective: To determine whether pregnancy outcomes differed for individuals with gestational diabetes who were offered MNT on a risk-prioritised (RP) versus universal basis.

Every year, dengue virus affects hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide. To date, there is no specific medication to treat dengue virus infections. Nucleobases, the base of a nucleoside without ribose, are understudied as potential treatments for viral infections.

Comparison of Respiratory Microbiomes in Influenza Versus Other Respiratory Infections: Systematic Review and Analysis.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Infectious Diseases Translational Research Program, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore 117545, Singapore.

Studies have indicated the potential importance of the human nasal and respiratory microbiomes in health and disease. However, the roles of these microbiomes in the pathogenesis of influenza and its complications are not fully understood. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review and analysis is to identify the patterns of nasal and respiratory microbiome dysbiosis and to define the unique signature bacteria associated with influenza compared with other respiratory tract infections.
