Background: Pneumopericardium is an uncommon clinical finding. It most commonly occurs after chest trauma but can also emerge as a complication following interventional or surgical procedures and can result in life-threatening complications. A high index of clinical suspicion should be present and once the condition is recognized, it should be managed promptly.

Pleuro-pericardial communication due to pigtail catheters in extreme preterm infants: Diagnosis and intervention.

J Neonatal Perinatal Med

October 2018

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Developmental Biology, University of Arizona, College of Medicine, Tucson, AZ, USA.

Pneumothorax in preterm infants is associated with an increased risk of chronic lung disease, intraventricular hemorrhage and mortality. In mechanically ventilated preterm infants, for the management of tension pneumothorax if needle aspiration is not successful a thoracostomy is needed. In the last two decades management of tension pneumothorax has changed from the use of traditional chest tubes to percutaneous pigtail catheter thoracostomy (PPCT) as the most commonly used technique.

Gastro-pleuro-pericardial fistula following combined radiation and chemotherapy for lung metastases from renal cell carcinoma: report of a case.

Surg Today

December 2013

Section of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology, Department of Human Pathology and Oncology, University of Siena, viale Bracci, Policlinico "Le Scotte", 53100, Siena, Italy.

Gastropleural and gastropericardial fistulas are abnormal communications between the stomach and the pleural cavity or pericardium. They are rare and life-threatening complications, which require prompt surgical intervention. We report the case of a gastro-pleuro-pericardial fistula that developed in a patient treated with radiotherapy and then Sunitinib (Sutent(®)), a novel tyrosine-kinase inhibitor, for lung metastases from renal cell carcinoma.

Pneumopericardium as a complication of pericardiocentesis.

Korean Circ J

May 2011

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Korea.

Pneumopericardium is a rare complication of pericardiocentesis, occurring either as a result of direct pleuro-pericardial communication or a leaky drainage system. Air-fluid level surrounding the heart shadow within the pericardium on a chest X-ray is an early observation at diagnosis. This clinical measurement and process is variable, depending on the hemodynamic status of the patient.
