Recent studies on the structure of the grc region in the rat.

Published: June 1997

Problem: To explore the nature of the genes in the grc.

Method: Chromosome walking of the grc and sequencing new genes.

Results: The RT1.O,N genes have been aligned, and two new types of genes, RT1.S1,2 and Rprl,2,3, have been discovered and mapped. An extensive physical map of the grc region is presented.

Conclusion: The disease associations in both the rat and the human appear to cluster in two regions that map in approximately the same place in both species, given the translocation that occurred in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the rat relative to the MHC of the human.

Nebulized aminoglycosides for ventilator-associated pneumonia: Methodological considerations and lessons from experimental studies.

Aminoglycosides are concentration-dependent antibiotics exerting a bactericidal effect when concentrations at the site of infection are equal to or greater than 5 times the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). When administered intravenously, they exhibit poor lung penetration and high systemic renal and ototoxicity, imposing to restrict their administration to 5 days. Experimental studies conducted in anesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep and pigs provide evidence that high doses of nebulized aminoglycosides induce a rapid and potent bacterial killing in the infected lung parenchyma.

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is the most common developmental cystic lesion of the jaws. Histologically, these cysts derive from the odontogenic epithelium that includes the reduced enamel epithelium, epithelial cell rests of Serres, and epithelial cell rests of Malassez. Radiographically, DCs are usually presented as well-defined radiolucencies associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth at the level of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ).

Objective: The digitalization of our daily living has changed dramatically the internet and digital media use among all ages. However, children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to potential dangers and addiction risks. Our objective was to evaluate the computer and internet addiction levels in children and adolescents through their parents' reports.

Correct classification of type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is challenging due to overlapping clinical features and the increasingly early onset of T2D, particularly in South Asians. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for T1D and T2D have been shown to work relatively well in South Asians, despite being derived from largely European-ancestry samples. Here we used PRSs to investigate the rate of potential misclassification of diabetes amongst British Bangladeshis and Pakistanis.

Purpose: Scleral cross-linking (SXL) with ultraviolet A (UVA) and riboflavin has already been used in laboratory studies for scleral stiffness increase as a potential treatment for progressive myopia and scleral ectasia. This study aims to investigate whether the regional application of scleral cross-linking (SXL) with ultraviolet A (UVA) and riboflavin in fresh porcine eye globes affects the ocular rigidity as well as its impact on intraocular pressure after an induced acute increase in the volume of intraocular fluid.

Methods: The study included two groups of fresh porcine eyes: an experimental group (n=20) that underwent scleral cross-linking (SXL) with riboflavin and UVA applied to the posterior sclera and a control group (n=20) that did not receive SXL treatment.
