Microporous polymers have great potential for the production of corneal keratoprosthetic devices. Keratocytes invade the pores of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene implants (ePTFE) and collagen synthesis occurs. This ePTFE becomes translucent after its implantation in the stroma of rabbit cornea. The rate and density of cell growth within this polymer depends on the implant thickness, pore size, and its placement in the cornea. We have investigated the influence of the polymer permeability on the collagen and protein contents ePTFE implants. Rabbit corneal stroma were implanted with ePTFE disks (6 mm in diameter) by intralamellar keratoplasty. The implanted polymers were removed from the stroma after 3 to 6 months. The collagen and protein contents were determined after pepsin solubilization. The collagen content of the high-permeability implant was 3.7-fold greater than that of the low-permeability implant 3 months after implantation and 2.4-fold greater after 6 months. The total protein content of the high-permeability implant was 2.5-fold greater than that of low-permeability implant at 3 months and was the same after 6 months. The collagen-to-protein ratio was 68% in the high-permeability implants, and thus similar to that of normal corneal stroma. Thus, high polymer permeability increased both the rate and density of the corneal extracellular matrix ingrowth.

Stress Relaxation and Creep Response of Glassy Hydrogels with Dense Physical Associations.

Various glassy hydrogels are developed by forming dense physical associations within the matrices, which exhibit forced elastic deformation and possess high stiffness, strength, and toughness. Here, the viscoplastic behaviors of the glassy hydrogel of poly(methacrylamide--methacrylic acid) are investigated by stress relaxation and creep measurements. We found that the characteristic time of stress relaxation of the glassy gel is much smaller than that of amorphous polymers.

The temperature- and viscosity-dependent rotational isomerization time constant () along the C-C˙ bond of CFBrCF radical in solution was measured using femtosecond infrared spectroscopy after photodissociating the I atom from CFBrCFI. Three density functional theory (DFT) functionals, ωB97XD, APFD, and B3LYP were used with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set to calculate the required parameters in calculating using Kramers' theory of reaction rates. The measured was consistent with the value calculated using the vibrational frequencies and rotational barriers of the related compounds calculated by DFT method with ωB97XD/aug-cc-pVTZ.

Weak dipole interactions between highly symmetric H2O molecules and SO42- species are the root cause of unstable electric double layer (EDL), which triggers the hydrogen evolution reaction and Zn dendrite formation, significantly impeding the commercialization of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, we designed a microscopic split-phase interface (MSPI) by dual breaking of electron cloud and space structure symmetry to suppress interfacial side reactions and achieve uniform Zn deposition. The structurally asymmetric methylurea (MU) molecules possess both hydrophobic methyl and hydrophilic amino groups, which disrupt the continuity of H-bonding network and the aggregation state of H2O molecules, resulting in peculiar nanoscale core-shell-like clusters.

Objective: Pedicle screw loosening is one of the common complications in elderly patients undergoing transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for lumbar spine disease. Malnutrition, prevalent among elderly patients, has been shown to be associated with increased complications. The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) serves as a simple indicator of nutritional status.
