An outbreak of rubella in April 1996 involved four male British soldiers deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina. All were helicopter ground crew who were members of the same unit and who periodically travelled to and worked at forward air refuelling stations in Bosnia. There was a potential for spread of the infection to adjacent British units, to troops of other nations in the peacekeeping force, and also to the local civilian population. The British force included 620 female personnel, some of whom may have been non-immune to rubella. One pregnant British servicewoman was repatriated to UK for her own protection. There was a potential health risk, including the possibility of congenital rubella syndrome, in the non-immune wives and partners of deployed male personnel, as a result of contact during the mid-tour home leave of the husbands or partners. The outbreak was monitored through a medical surveillance system known as ARRC 97, and was contained by prompt and rigorous control measures. This outbreak shows the importance of effective surveillance and of good microbiology laboratory support during military operations. The role of immunization against rubella during future military deployments is discussed.

The AEP 2025 Vaccination and Immunization Schedule recommended for children, adolescents and pregnant women residing in Spain features the following novelties: Due to the increase in measles cases and outbreaks in recent years, we recommend advancing the second dose of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to 2 years of age. As a consequence of the above, since many autonomous communities (ACs) use the quadrivalent vaccine for the second dose of MMR and varicella vaccines, we recommend, for all ACs, advancing the second dose of varicella vaccine to 2 years of age. Due to the very significant increase in cases of pertussis since late 2023 and especially in 2024, we recommend advancing the dose of Tdap given in adolescence to 10-12 years of age.

Methods: Surveys and questionnaires with a retrospective cohort of live births in 2017-2018, analyzing vaccination coverage and sociodemographic data of children and families, based on vaccination card records and interviews.
Results: Valid coverage of first dose was 90.

Objectives: To investigate if receipt of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine following the third dose of diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP3) is associated with reduced rates of non-targeted infectious disease hospitalisations.
Methods: Register based cohort study following 1,397,027 children born in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden until 2 years of age. Rates of infectious disease hospitalisations with minimum one overnight stay according to time-varying vaccination status were compared using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis with age as the underlying timescale and including multiple covariates.

Background/objectives: Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) is a constellation of serious multi-organ birth defects following rubella virus infection during early pregnancy. Countries in which rubella vaccination has not yet been introduced can have a high burden of this disease. Data on CRS burden and epidemiology are needed to guide the introduction of a rubella vaccine and monitor progress for rubella elimination, but the multi-system nature of CRS manifestations and required specialized testing creates a challenge for conducting CRS surveillance in developing settings such as Sudan.
