Because mucosal immune responses may be important in protection against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), HIV-1-specific immune responses at mucosal sites in natural infection were compared. Total antibody concentrations and HIV-1-specific binding antibody responses in four distinct mucosal sites and serum were assessed in 41 HIV-infected and 19 HIV-seronegative women. HIV-1 gp160-specific IgG responses were detected in >99% of mucosal samples in infected subjects, with the highest titers in genital secretions. HIV-1-specific IgA was detected in the majority of endocervical secretions (94%) and nasal washes (95%) but less often in vaginal washes (51%) and parotid saliva (38%). There was no significant correlation between mucosal immune response and most clinical factors. Based on methodologic considerations, frequencies of detection, and HIV-1-specific responses, nasal washes and genital secretions may each provide important measures of HIV-1-specific mucosal immune responses in infected women.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species, contaminates global agricultural products and poses significant health risks, particularly to the gastrointestinal (GI) system. DON exposure disrupts ribosomal function, inducing stress responses linked to various inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we elucidate a novel regulatory mechanism involving ribosomal proteins (RPs) RPL13A and RPS3, which mediate proinflammatory chemokine production in DON-exposed gut epithelial cells.

Introduction: Molecular alterations in the PI3K/AKT and Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK pathways are frequently observed in patients with endometrial cancers. However, mTOR inhibitors, such as temsirolimus, have modest clinical benefits. In addition to inducing metabolic changes in cells, metformin activates AMPK, which in turn inhibits the mTOR pathway.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is an uncommon, chronic, immune-mediated condition characterized by eosinophilic infiltration that can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical manifestations depend on the different layers of the intestinal wall affected, which also allows its classification into three subtypes (Klein classification) (1): mucosal, which presents with abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting; muscular, with obstruction or perforation; and serosal, classically with ascites. Diagnosis requires the demonstration of tissue eosinophilia with compatible clinical manifestations, after excluding other causes of eosinophilia.

Sex hormones regulate gut function and mucosal immunity; however, their specific effects on the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) in the rectum of mammals remain unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the influence of sex on MALT in the rectum of mammals by focusing on the rectal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues (RMALTs) of C57BL/6NCrSIc mice. Histological analysis revealed that RMALTs were predominantly located in the lamina propria and submucosa of the rectal mucosa, with a significant sex-related difference in the distance from the anorectal junction to the first appearance of the RMALT.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has opened up new avenues for exploring the importance of vitamin D in immunity, in addition to its role in calcium absorption. Recently, vitamin D supplementation has been found to enhance T regulatory lymphocytes, which are reduced in individuals with COVID-19. Increased risk of pneumonia and increases in inflammatory cytokines have been reported to be major threats associated with vitamin-D deficiency.
