Conditioned switching over of heterogeneous instrumental reactions was elaborated in four dogs. The action of a fan served as a switch from alimentary to a defensive situation. In the alimentary situation, the animal, in response to a conditioned stimulus, pressed the pedal with its right foreleg and, in a defensive situation, in response to the same signal, lifted the left paw attached to the lever. In some dogs the switching over was elaborated quite rapidly and easily, while in others it was achieved only on some days of the experiment. In the course of elaboration of the switching over, the animals responded to the trigger signal with bieffector reactions. The basic features of the dynamics of switching over elaboration revealed for classic conditioned reflexes also proved valid for instrumental conditioned reflexes.

Background & Aims: Owing to unexplained interpatient variation and treatment failure in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), novel therapeutic approaches remain an urgent clinical need. Hepatic neurons, belonging to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), mediate liver/whole body crosstalk. Pathological innervation of the ANS has been identified in cancer, nurturing tumor stroma and conferring stronger carcinogenic properties.

ABO-incompatible transplantations are increasingly gaining relevance with advancements in therapeutic modalities, thus allowing patients to receive timely solid organ transplants. Therapeutic apheresis (TA) procedures remain instrumental as a preconditioning measure to enable such transplants. This survey was undertaken to find out current trends and practices of TA across major transplant centers in India.

Stimulus conditions that promote habitual control.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Psychology, The University of Toronto, 100 St. George Street, Toronto, ON, M5S 3G3, Canada.

Two experiments in rats examined how training where a stimulus signaled when to respond for reward, conditions that should favour S-R learning, might lead to habitual control of behaviour. Experiment 1 investigated how animals trained with a stimulus preceding lever insertion would impact learning relative to a group that was self-paced and could control lever insertion with a second, distinct response. Rats were then tested for sensitivity to outcome devaluation to distinguish between goal-directed and habitual control.

Neuronal encoding of behaviors and instrumental learning in the dorsal striatum.

Trends Neurosci

January 2025

Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), ULB Neuroscience Institute, Neurophysiology Laboratory, Brussels, Belgium. Electronic address:

The dorsal striatum is instrumental in regulating motor control and goal-directed behaviors. The classical description of the two output pathways of the dorsal striatum highlights their antagonistic control over actions. However, recent experimental evidence implicates both pathways and their coordinated activities during actions.

Background: The goal of these experiments was to determine which learning and memory system(s) were necessary for the retention of visual discriminations and subsequent acquisition of a second problem. The dorsal striatum should be involved in the acquisition and expression of this task based on previous work implicating this region in instrumental learning and memory processes. The perirhinal cortex has been implicated in learning and memory processes associated with visual information like objects, and pictures and may also play a role in the acquisition and/or retention of visual discriminations.
