Dynamic mechanical properties of Silastic HP-100 finger joint implants were studied. Sixteen sections of unimplanted and 14 sections of retrieved implants were analyzed with standard thermal analysis techniques. Results show that implantation does not alter the viscoelastic properties of Silastic HP-100 elastomers. The authors conclude that fracture of Silastic HP-100 implants cannot be attributed to changes in rheologic properties of the implanted elastomer.

This study evaluated the titanium grommets recommended to reduce breakage by protecting hinge implants from bone edges. Silastic HP-100 (Dow Corning Wright, Arlington, TN) flexible finger implants (size 5) were used to replace one knee of 10 rabbits, and implants plus titanium grommets were used in another 10. X-ray films were taken monthly; deaths from each group were 1 animal at 2 and 4 months, 2 animals at 6, and 3 each at 12 and 16 months.

The Swanson Silastic HP 100 Flexible Hinge Toe Implant (Dow Corning Wright, Arlington Tennessee) displays superior tensile, elongation and tear propagation strength in comparison to other silicone implant materials. It is, however, subject to many factors which may shorten its life-span. One reason for such failure has been attributed to the irregular contour of bone ends created after metatarsophalangeal joint arthroplasty, resulting in abrasion shards and shearing fractures of the implant stems and hinge.
