Assays of the potency of inactivated poliovirus vaccine require the use of an appropriate reference reagent. Preparation 91/574 was shown by international collaborative study to be suitable for determination of antigenic content and immunogenicity of inactivated poliovirus vaccines by in vitro and in vivo assays, respectively. The reagent is a trivalent blend of formaldehyde-inactivated monovalent pools of poliovirus type 1 (Mahoney) poliovirus type 2 (MEF-1) and poliovirus type 3 (Saukett). Studies by antigen-capture ELISA showed that the component monovalent pools contained high titres of D antigen and trace amounts of C antigen. Sucrose gradient analysis showed that the D antigenicity was almost exclusively associated with 150S virus particles. Low levels of procapsids (75S particles with D antigenicity) were detected in the type 1 and 2 monovalent pools. The profile of intact virions and procapsids in 91/574 in sucrose gradients was very similar to PU78-02, a previously used inactivated trivalent poliovirus vaccine reference. The World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee on Biological Standardization at its 1994 meeting established preparation 91/574 as the 2nd WHO international Reference Reagent for poliomyelitis vaccine (inactivated). A potency of 430, 95, 285 D antigen units per ml was assigned to poliovirus type 1, 2 and 3, respectively. A separate aliquot of this preparation, established by the European Pharmacopeia Commission as a Biological Reference Preparation, has an identical assigned titre. The 2nd WHO International Reference Reagent 91/574 is intended for calibration of secondary reference reagents.

Nucleic acid testing is the most effective detection method currently available for the diagnosis of respiratory infectious diseases. However, the conventional real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR technique, which is regarded as the gold standard method for nucleic acid detection, presents significant challenges for implementation in home self-testing and popularization in underdeveloped regions due to its rigorous experimental standards. It is therefore clear that an easy-to-use, miniaturized nucleic acid testing technology and products for nonprofessionals are of great necessity to define the pathogens and assist in controlling disease transmission.

"Hot quadrate lobe sign" refers to visualization of caudate lobe of liver due to excess accumulation of radiotracer secondary to superior vena cava obstruction. Collateral channels are formed between thoracic and mediastinal vessels; internal mammary through the paraumbilical vessels which drain blood to the left portal vein and into the caudate lobe of liver. It was first described on Tc99-m sulfur colloid scan.

Recently, the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) of Brazil recalled several lots of sartan drugs due to the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA is a highly potent carcinogenic contaminant that harms human health; therefore, the presence of NDMA in sartan drugs must be checked through appropriate analytical methods. This work successfully developed a new analytical method for determining NDMA without chemical pretreatment of losartan and olmesartan drug samples.

Introduction: Seed amplification assays (SAAs) demonstrate remarkable diagnostic performance in alpha-synucleinopathies. However, existing protocols lack accessibility in routine laboratories, mainly due to the requirement for in-house production of recombinant alpha-synuclein (aSyn). This study proposes a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) aSyn-SAA protocol using solely commercial reagents to facilitate its clinical implementation.

Pheophytin-a derivatives possessing plastoquinone and phylloquinone analogs in the peripheral 3-substituent were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reactions of a 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin as one of the chlorophyll-a derivatives with benzo- and naphthohydroquinones, respectively, and successive oxidation of the 1,4-dihydroxy-aryl groups in the resulting dehydration products. The 3-quinonylmethyl-chlorins exhibited ultraviolet-visible absorption and circular dichroism spectra in acetonitrile, which were composed of those of the starting 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin and the corresponding methylated benzo- and naphthoquinones. No intramolecular interaction between the chlorin and quinone π-systems was observed in the solution owing to the methylene spacer.
