Sedimentation properties of leukocytes was measured with a new, simple and reproducible method. The increment of leukocyte concentration was determined in the upper 100 mm section of the sedimentation blood column after one hour gravity sedimentation of the whole blood. The result (leukocyte antisedimentation rate, LAR) was expressed in percentage of the original, presedimentation leukocyte concentration. Blood samples taken from 35 healthy adults were investigated and 12.5% and 17.4% increments were found in total leukocyte count and in granulocyte concentration respectively in the upper half of the sedimentation blood column. The mean coefficient of variation of LAR measurements was 3.2% LAR was found significantly higher in a mixed group of patients than in healthy controls. The sedimentation properties of leukocytes were in significant correlation with leukocyte adherence (p < 0.01), with whole blood viscosity, hematocrit, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (each p < 0.05) when blood samples of healthy individuals and postoperative intensive care patients were analysed in combination. In vitro pre-treatment of patients' blood samples with prednisolone and lidocaine resulted in a significant diminishment of LAR in a concentration dependent manner.

Purposes: We analyzed the acute-phase response in unilateral thyroidectomy by comparing the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOEVA) with the minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT).
Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to undergo either TOEVA or MIVAT, after we obtained their written informed consent to participate in this study. Blood count, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-) were measured before surgery and then 4, 24, and 48 h after surgery.

Background: Recent studies in the younger old have identified associations between cognitive performance and markers of inflammation, including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). These associations remain unexplored in the oldest old (age 90+), an age group most vulnerable to dementia. In addition, no studies have examined if amyloid burden impacts these associations.

Objective: In the current study, to demonstrate the advantages of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF), we focused on the therapeutics for lumbar spinal tuberculosis with the comparison of three treatments, including anterior approach, posterior approach, and OLIF combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation.
Methods: This study included patients with lumbar spinal tuberculosis from July 2015 to June 2018. We divided these patients into three groups: 35 patients underwent an anterior-only approach (Group A), 36 patients underwent a posterior-only approach (Group B), and 31 patients underwent OLIF combined with posterior percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (Group C).

To investigate the effect of serum galectin-3 on naive neovascular AMD and its use as a serum marker by revealing the variation in this molecule between patient and control groups. Fifty-six naive neovascular AMD patients and 30 healthy control age-matched healthy subjects were included in this prospective case‒control study. Blood samples were obtained and used for analysis of complete blood count; High sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, homocysteine, HbA1c and galectin-3 levels.

This report describes a case of lumbar disc infection potentially induced by acupuncture in a 43-year-old male with a history of back pain. After acupuncture treatment at another hospital, the patient experienced worsened pain. Physical examination revealed tenderness at the upper lumbar intervertebral space and paravertebral percussion pain.
