Article Abstract

Purpose: Cataract often develops after macular hole surgery, necessitating cataract surgery. We report a combination of macular hole surgery and cataract surgery on four eyes of four patients.

Methods: Four eyes of four patients had a full-thickness stage III or IV macular hole and some degree of cataract. Combined cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant and macular hole surgery was associated with intravitreal perfluoropropane at 15% concentration and with face-down positioning for 21 days.

Results: After combined cataract and macular hole surgery, the rim of subretinal fluid resolved successfully in four eyes of four patients. Twelve months after surgery, the macular hole reopened in one eye in association with the new onset of macular pucker. Best-corrected visual acuities ranged from 20/25 to 20/100 12 months after surgery, while preoperative visual acuities with best correction were 20/70 to 20/200.

Conclusions: In selected cases, a combination of cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant and macular hole surgery offers advantages. This combined approach warrants consideration.

Purpose: Formation of a full thickness macular hole (FTMH) after vitrectomy is rare. The aim of this study was to describe risk factors, clinical course, anatomical and functional prognosis of secondary FTMH development following surgery for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).

Methods: Retrospective study.

Background: An idiopathic macular hole (IMH) is a foveal opening in the neurosensory retina caused by perifoveal vitreomacular traction and detachment. IMH prevalence varies considerably across populations, highlighting a need for further investigation, especially in underrepresented groups such as Hispanics.

Methods: This retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study analyzed IMH prevalence in a Hispanic population over four years.

Department of Retina and Vitreous, Narayana Nethralaya, #121/C, 1st R Block, Chord Road, Rajaji Nagar, Bengaluru, 560010, India.

Purpose: To evaluate the predictive accuracy of various machine learning (ML) statistical models in forecasting postoperative visual acuity (VA) outcomes following macular hole (MH) surgery using preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters.

Methods: This retrospective study included 158 eyes (151 patients) with full-thickness MHs treated between 2017 and 2023 by the same surgeon and using the same intraoperative surgical technique. Data from electronic medical records and OCT scans were extracted, with OCT-derived qualitative and quantitative MH characteristics recorded.

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of split-thickness amniotic membrane (SAM) grafts in achieving closure of refractory or large macular holes (MH).

Methods: This retrospective study reviewed data from patients who underwent surgical repair of MHs using SAM grafts between January 2019 and December 2023. Key parameters, including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and MH size, were evaluated both preoperatively and postoperatively.

: This study aimed to assess the role of macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in patients with a full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) compared to healthy controls, evaluating postoperative changes in MPOD and exploring potential correlations with visual outcomes. : This prospective, cross-sectional, comparative study included 16 eyes from FTMH patients who achieved anatomical hole closure following pars plana vitrectomy with the inverted ILM flap technique. Each eye underwent a comprehensive ophthalmologic examination, including BCVA and intraocular pressure measurements, anterior segment evaluation, fundus examination, and macular assessment with Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography (EDI-OCT, Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering Inc.
