Objective: To examine the comparative immunogenicity of the Haemophilus influenzae type b-meningococcal protein (PRP-OMP) conjugate vaccine in Polynesian and non-Polynesian New Zealand infants.
Methodology: Fifty-six Polynesian and 53 non-Polynesian infants aged 2-7 months recruited from primary health care settings in Auckland received a two-dose primary series of PRP-OMP. A sub-sample of 83 participants received a booster dose of PRP-OMP at 12-16 months of age. Anti-PRP antibody concentrations were measured in pre- and post-vaccination blood samples.
Results: Antibody responses consistent with long-term protection (> or = 1.00 microgram/mL) were observed in 72, 85 and 95% of children following the first, second and booster doses.
Conclusions: Despite differences in disease epidemiology, PRP-OMP was highly immunogenic in Polynesian and non-Polynesian infants.

The Vanuatu archipelago served as a gateway to Remote Oceania during one of the most extensive human migrations to uninhabited lands ∼3,000 years ago. Ancient DNA studies suggest an initial settlement by East Asian-related peoples that was quickly followed by the arrival of Papuan-related populations, leading to a major population turnover. Yet there is uncertainty over the population processes and the sociocultural factors that have shaped the genomic diversity of ni-Vanuatu, who present nowadays among the world's highest linguistic and cultural diversity.

Anti-Jk3 is a rare alloantibody to a high-prevalence antigen primarily seen in individuals of Polynesian descent and is associated with a handful of well-established variants of the gene. We report a case of the Jk phenotype, associated with formation of anti-Jk3, in a patient of non-Polynesian descent. This patient, a 51-year-old woman self-described as of Jamaican and Scottish ancestry, presented to our hospital for oncologic care.

The current understanding of the genetic architecture of lipids has largely come from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). To date, few GWAS have examined the genetic architecture of lipids in Polynesians, and none have in Samoans, whose unique population history, including many population bottlenecks, may provide insight into the biological foundations of variation in lipid levels. Here we performed a GWAS of four fasting serum lipid levels: total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG) in a sample of 2849 Samoans, with validation genotyping for associations in a replication cohort comprising 1798 Samoans and American Samoans.
