by dissecting very fine strands of the liver afferent nerves, in cats, it has been possible to record activity of single fibers during intraportal infusion of different test-solutions. Different fibers were found which responded specifically to increase in the intraportal volume, to change of the osmosis and of concentration of ions. The liver was found to have highly selective specific populations of receptors: mechano (volume)-, osmo-, Na+-sensitive and K+ sensitive receptors.

Hagfishes are characterized by omo- and iono-conforming nature similar to marine invertebrates. Conventionally, hagfishes had been recognized as the most primitive living vertebrate that retains plesiomorphic features. However, some of the "ancestral" features of hagfishes, such as rudimentary eyes and the lack of vertebrae, have been proven to be deceptive.

Rare earth elements (REE) are emerging contaminants due to their increased use in diverse applications including cutting-edge and green-technologies. Their environmental concerns and contradicting results concerning their biological effects require an extensive understanding of REE ecotoxicology. Thus, we have studied the fate, bioaccumulation and biological effects of three representative REE, neodymium (Nd), gadolinium (Gd) and ytterbium (Yb), individually and in mixture, using the freshwater bivalve Corbicula fluminea.

August Krogh made fundamental discoveries about both respiratory gas exchange and osmo/iono-regulation in fish gills. Dave Randall and co-workers identified a tradeoff between these two functions such that high functional surface area and low diffusion distance would favour O uptake (e.g.

Nutritional deprivation or desiccation can influence thermal tolerance by impacting the insects' ability to evaporatively cool, maintain cell membrane integrity and conduct protective or repair processes. Recovery from chilling is also linked to the re-establishment of iono- and osmo-regulatory homeostasis. Here, using Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata, Diptera: Tephritidae), we manipulated water and nutrient availability to test the mechanistic expectation that changes in whole organism lipid and water content can elicit variation in cold or heat tolerance (scored as chill coma recovery time and heat knockdown time).

The injection of anthropogenically-produced CO2 into the atmosphere will lead to an increase in temperature and a decrease in pH at the surface of the oceans by 2100. Marine intertidal organisms possess the ability to cope in the short term with environmental fluctuations exceeding predicted values. However, how they will cope with chronic exposure to elevated temperature and pCO2 is virtually unknown.
