Metal ions are indispensable to life, as they can serve as essential enzyme cofactors to drive fundamental biochemical reactions, yet paradoxically, excess is highly toxic. Higher-order cells have evolved functionally distinct organelles that separate and coordinate sophisticated biochemical processes to maintain cellular homeostasis upon metal ion stimuli. Here, we uncover the remodeling of subcellular architecture and organellar interactome in yeast initiated by several metal ion stimulations, relying on near-native three-dimensional imaging, cryo-soft X-ray tomography.

Purpose: To describe a case of short common trunk of the occipital artery (OA) and ascending pharyngeal artery (APA) arising from the internal carotid artery (ICA).

Methods: A 36-year-old woman with a history of surgical resection of a right lateral ventricular meningioma and atheromatous plaque of the right ICA underwent cranial magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and MR angiography of the head and neck region with a 3-Tesla scanner.

Results: MR angiography of the neck region showed a small atheromatous plaque at the origin of the right ICA and an anomalous artery arising from the posteromedial aspect of the right ICA at the distal end of the carotid bulb.

Background: The prevalence of knee osteoarthritis in Southeast Asia has increased steadily over the years. When conservative management options fail, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a reliable surgical option. Despite over 90% post-operative satisfaction, the high volume of TKAs performed means that even a small percentage of dissatisfied patients holds significance.

Accuracy and reliability of tibial torsion measurement using radiography and ultrasound in dogs.

Vet Med (Praha)

December 2024

Department of Veterinary Surgery, College of Veterinary Medicine, Jeonbuk National University, Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea.

Tibial torsion assessment is crucial for understanding deformities and malalignments that can lead to joint pathologies in dogs. Different methods such as radiography, computed tomography (CT), and three-dimensional (3D) volume-rendering techniques have been employed to measure tibial torsion. This study compared the accuracy and reliability of tibial torsion angle (TTa) measurements obtained using radiography and ultrasound tilting techniques against those obtained using the 3D volume-rendering method in small-to-medium-sized non-chondrodystrophic dogs.

Conductive and flexible gold-coated polylactic acid nanofiber-based electrochemical aptasensor for monitoring cortisol level in sweat and saliva.

Bioelectrochemistry

January 2025

Department of Bioengineering, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-Ku, Tokyo 113-8656, Japan. Electronic address:

Conductive nanofibers can exhibit excellent mechanical properties such as flexibility, elasticity, porosity, large surface area-to-volume ratio, etc making them suitable for a wide range of applications including biosensor development. Their large surface area provides more active sites for immobilization of large amount of bioreceptors enabling more interaction sites with the target analytes, enhancing sensitivity and detection capabilities. However, engineering conductive nanofibers with such excellent properties is challenging limiting their effective deployment for intended applications.
