Flutamide photosensitivity.

Photodermatol Photoimmunol Photomed

Department of Dermatology of Caen, France.

Published: October 1996

Flutamide is a non-steroid antiandrogen used in advanced prostate cancer. This drug induces liver toxicity. Other side effects have been reported, especially four cases of photosensitivity. Our patient presented a sun-exposed eruption that disappeared when flutamide was discontinued and relapsed when it was rechallenged. Photopatch tests were negative. UVA MED was much lower during the treatment and the rechallenge of flutamide. The action spectrum of the drug seems to be in the UVA range. According to the literature, this photosensitivity is probably due to a photo-allergic mechanism.

Effective decontamination of hospital surfaces is crucial to protect workers from antineoplastic drugs (ADs) since dermal absorption is the main exposure route to these hazardous medicinal products. Sampling after daily cleaning in oncologic settings from a tertiary hospital was initially performed and exhibited low contamination levels; however, cyclophosphamide was still found (up to 957 pg/cm) above the guidance value (100 pg/cm) in four locations, evidencing the need to properly assess and update the cleaning protocols. Then, cleaning efficiencies of six solutions and different protocols were evaluated (including, for the first time, four commercial cleaning solutions/disinfectants not designed specifically for AD removal) after deliberate contamination of three model surfaces with 13 pharmaceuticals: bicalutamide, capecitabine, cyclophosphamide, cyproterone, doxorubicin, etoposide, flutamide, ifosfamide, imatinib, megestrol, mycophenolate mofetil, paclitaxel, and prednisone.

The g-C3N4/CS biosensor was designed, fabricated, and tested using compounds such as glucose, urine, lactose, and flutamide at a molarity of 10 µM, which could demonstrate a high sensitivity of 200 μm-1 for flutamide. Powerful effective medium theory and FDTD simulation were used to predict the most favorable mode and plasmonic properties of a graphite carbon nitride and chitosan nanocomposite. The research also explores the characteristics of surface plasmon resonance exhibited by the nanocomposite as the chitosan content is adjusted.

Objective: We aimed to examine trends in novel antiandrogen receptor signal inhibitor (ARSI) usage and medical costs by collecting real-world big data included in The National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan (NDB) Open Data, covering most of the clinical practices throughout Japan.

Methods: Usage data for outpatient prescriptions from 2016 to 2021 were extracted from the NDB Open Data. Among the 459,610 million tablets/capsules prescribed, prostate cancer-specific agents (bicalutamide, estramustine phosphate, flutamide, abiraterone, enzalutamide, apalutamide, and darolutamide) were selected to investigate the trends of usage and medical costs.

Neuroprotective effects of testosterone on sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity in testosterone-deprived male mice.

Neuropharmacology

March 2025

Department of Anesthesiology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin Institute of Anesthesiology, Tianjin, China. Electronic address:

This study aims to investigate whether androgen deprivation, simulating conditions of aging or disease-induced low testosterone levels, increases the susceptibility of male mice to sevoflurane neurotoxicity, and whether testosterone supplementation can reverse the toxic effects of sevoflurane. In here, young male mice were subjected to orchiectomy (ORC) to induce testosterone deprivation. Various techniques, including western blotting, immunofluorescence, Morris Water Maze, Golgi staining, and neuronal signal measurement, were used to evaluate the effects of sevoflurane on long-term (ORC 10 weeks) and short-term (ORC 2 weeks) testosterone deprivation, and assess whether testosterone (1 mg/kg 1 h before sevoflurane exposure) could mitigate sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of various nanocages (C, Ge, AlP, Ni-C, Ni-Ge, Cr-C, and Cr-AlP) in delivering the anticancer drugs flutamide and cyclophosphamide, factoring in adsorption parameters and recovery times.
  • Results indicate that Ni-Ge and Cr-AlP nanocages show superior drug delivery capacity, with significantly lower recovery times compared to other nanostructures previously studied.
  • The research employs advanced computational methods to optimize the nanocage structures and calculate thermodynamic parameters, revealing enhanced capabilities due to the incorporation of Ni and Cr atoms.
