We determined the effects of distraction on gait in healthy elderly subjects and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. The effects of simultaneous performance of a verbal fluency task (effect of reciting male or female names) on the time and number of steps taken to walk 30 feet were compared using a repeated-measures design with between-group comparison between community-dwelling healthy old old (oOld; n = 20; mean age +/- SD, 86 +/- 4.4), healthy young old (yOld; n = 23; mean age +/- SD, 72 +/- 3.6), and probable AD subjects without parkinsonism (n = 15; mean age +/- SD, 74 +/- 13). AD patients slowed more than the yOld (p = 0.005) and the oOld (p = 0.002). The yOld and oOld did not differ from each other (p = 0.68). Mean (+/-SD) differences in time were as follows: yOld, -2.2 +/- 1.9; oOld, -1.6 +/- 2.0; AD, -7.1 +/- 9.2 seconds. The change in steps did not differ between groups. Walking speed of AD patients slowed more than that of elderly subjects during the dual task. This may contribute to the risk of falls in AD.

Importance: Patients with septic shock undergo adrenergic stress, which affects cardiac, immune, inflammatory, and metabolic pathways. β-Blockade may attenuate the adverse effects of catecholamine exposure and has been associated with reduced mortality.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of landiolol in patients with tachycardia and established septic shock requiring prolonged (>24 hours) vasopressor support.

NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics.

Ecology

Laboratório de Ecologia Espacial e Conservação (LEEC), Departamento de Biodiversidade, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Rio Claro, SP, 13506-900, Brazil.

Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae.

NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics.

Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • - The paper presents an autonomous disinfection tunnel designed to sanitize surfaces potentially contaminated with COVID-19, suitable for high-traffic public areas like airports and schools.
  • - The tunnel features two chambers employing three disinfection methods: a disinfectant spray in Chamber 1 and exposure to hot air and far-ultraviolet C rays in Chamber 2, enhancing virus neutralization efficacy.
  • - Developed through a collaboration between Technopark@iitk and ALIMCO under Indian government ministries, this innovative solution is called the 'Techno Advanced Disinfection Tunnel' (TADT).

Xenarthrans-anteaters, sloths, and armadillos-have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths.
