This is a description of a comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC) system for the separation of protein mixtures. This system uses cation-exchange chromatography followed by reversed-phase chromatography (RPLC). The two LC systems are coupled by an eight-port valve equipped with two storage loops and under computer control. The RPLC effluent is sampled by both a UV detector and an electrospray mass spectrometer. In this way, complex mixtures of large biomolecules can be rapidly separated, desalted, and analyzed for molecular weight in less than 2 h. The system's utility is demonstrated with a mixture of standards and an Escherichia coli cell lysate.

The concept of sustainable production necessitates the utilization of waste and by-products as raw materials, the implementation of biotechnological processes, and the introduction of automated real-time monitoring for efficient use of resources. One example is the biocatalyzed conversion of the reusable by-product glycerin by acetic acid bacteria to dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is of great importance to the cosmetic industry. The application of compact spectrometers enables the rapid measurement of samples while simultaneously reducing the consumption of resources and energy.

Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH), including saturated (MOSH) and aromatic (MOAH) hydrocarbons, are contaminants of petrogenic origin. On-line high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) - gas chromatography (GC) - flame ionization detector (FID) was used for determining MOH in olive oils (OOs) and olive pomace oils (OPOs) at different stages of the refining process and in samples from the Italian market. Deodorization reduced contamination by about 30 %, resulting in a significant reduction of endogenous n-alkanes generally up to n-C.

The present study explores the capability of asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) coupled online with diode array (DAD), fluorescence detectors (FLD), multi-angle light scattering (MALS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) to characterize silver nanoparticles (nAg) hetero-aggregates formed with diatoms derived extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The content of EPS varied from 10.5 to 105 mgC L and nAg were dispersed at 4 mg L in a freshwater medium.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbon-containing molecules with high vapor pressure and low water solubility that are released from biotic and abiotic matrices. Because they are in the gaseous phase, these compounds tend to remain undetected when using conventional metabolomic profiling methods. Despite this omission, efforts to profile VOCs can provide useful information related to metabolic status and identify potential signaling pathways or toxicological impacts in natural or engineered environments.
