Hubel and Wiesel's ice-cube model proposed that V1 orientation and ocular dominance functional maps intersect orthogonally to optimize wiring efficiency. Here, we revisited this model and additional arrangements at both cellular and pixel levels in awake macaques using two-photon calcium imaging. The recorded response fields of view were similar in size to hypercolumns, each containing up to 2,000 identified neurons and representing full periods of orientation preferences and ocular dominance.

Background: Transfusion demand is high in liver transplantation (LT), and thus RhD-positive (RhD+) red blood cell concentrates (RBCs) are sometimes given to RhD-negative (RhD-) patients. Due to immunosuppression, these patients rarely produce anti-D. We investigated the rate of anti-D formation in RhD- patients undergoing LT who were transfused with RhD+ RBCs as well as the number of transfused RhD- and RhD+ RBCs.

Linear enamel hypoplasias (LEHs) are development defects appearing as lines or grooves on enamel surfaces. Forming when physiological stressors disrupt developing teeth, LEHs provide retrospective insight into stress experienced in early development. Here, LEHs in Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were observed with respect to decade of birth, whether an individual was transferred from the free-ranging colony to the captive facility during probable crown formation periods, and matriline of birth.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), a neuroendocrine signal of energy balance and satiety, has a major role in regulating food intake behaviour. Here we investigated the effects of the GLP-1 agonist exenatide on palatability-driven feeding regulation in adult male rhesus macaques (n = 5) using a novel operant food intake paradigm with four meal schedule conditions where two types of pellets with different palatability values were offered as meal in all combinations in two consecutive daily feeding sessions (S1 and S2). In control conditions, a strong, palatability-driven anticipatory effect was found in S1, followed by a complementary positive contrast effect in S2.

Rapid and reliable Rhesus D typing is crucial for blood donation centers. In instances of massive blood transfusion or reduced antigen expression, DNA-based phenotype prediction becomes mandatory. Our molecular typing approach involves an initial real-time PCR for the most common aberrant types in our region, (weak D type 1), (weak D type 2), (weak D type 3), and (DVII).
