Nociplastic pain: controversy of the concept.

Korean J Pain

January 2025

Independent Researcher, Vilnius, Lithuania.

Classically, pain can be of a nociceptive or neuropathic nature, which refers to non-neural or neural tissue lesions, respectively. Chronic pain in conditions such as migraine, fibromyalgia, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is thought to perpetuate without a noxious input. Pain in such patients can be assigned neither to the nociceptive nor neuropathic category.

Adult stuttering prevalence I: Systematic review and identification of stuttering in large populations.

J Fluency Disord

October 2024

Manchester Centre for Audiology & Deafness (ManCAD), University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • The review aims to evaluate the methods for identifying stuttering in large populations and provide accurate estimates of adult stuttering prevalence.
  • Data from 15 studies were analyzed for quality, with three meeting the inclusion criteria, revealing adult stuttering prevalence rates ranging from 0.21% to 0.67%.
  • The findings highlight a paradox where low prevalence necessitates very high specificity in measurements, suggesting that covert stuttering might be underreported, although refining estimates is unlikely to surpass a 1% prevalence rate.

Adult stuttering prevalence II: Recalculation, subgrouping and estimate of stuttering community engagement.

J Fluency Disord

September 2024

Manchester Centre for Audiology & Deafness (ManCAD), University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL, UK.

Purpose: Epidemiological research of stuttering has frequently focused on children, with a relative paucity of population level data specific to adults. Prevalence data for adults are reassessed here, including a breakdown of whether stuttering is overt or covert, and whether onset was in childhood or adulthood. The engagement of adults who stutter with stuttering communities is also estimated.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are episodic events that bear a resemblance to epileptic seizures (ES) in their outward manifestations, yet they lack pathological electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during the ictal phase. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th Edition (DSM-5), PNES is designated as "Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder with seizures". Individuals diagnosed with PNES commonly present with concurrent psychiatric disorders, notably depression, panic disorder, and chronic anxiety.
