Slit1 Promotes Hypertrophic Scar Formation Through the TGF-β Signaling Pathway.

Medicina (Kaunas)

December 2024

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital, College of Medicine, Hallym University, 94-200 Yeongdeungpo-Dong, Yeongdeungpo-Ku, Seoul 07247, Republic of Korea.

Slit1 is a secreted protein that is closely related to cell movement and adhesion. Few studies related to fibrosis exist, and the preponderance of current research is confined to the proliferation and differentiation of neural systems. Hypertrophic scars (HTSs) are delineated by an overproduction of the extracellular matrix (ECM) by activated fibroblasts, leading to anomalous fibrosis, which is a severe sequela of burns.

Phase Control in Monometallic and Alloy Nanomaterials.

Chem Rev

January 2025

Division of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, Kitashirakawa-Oiwakecho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8502, Japan.

Metal nanomaterials with unconventional phases have been recently developed with a variety of methods and exhibit novel and attractive properties such as high activities for various catalytic reactions and magnetic properties. In this review, we discuss the progress and the trends in strategies for synthesis, crystal structure, and properties of phase-controlled metal nanomaterials in terms of elements and the combination of alloys. We begin with a brief introduction of the anomalous phase behavior derived from the nanosize effect and general crystal structures observed in metal nanomaterials.

RAFT Dispersion Polymerization of 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate in Non-polar Media.

Macromolecules

December 2024

Dainton Building, Department of Chemistry, University of Sheffield, Brook Hill, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7HF, U.K.

We report the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in -dodecane using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) precursor at 90 °C. This formulation is an example of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), which leads to the formation of a colloidal dispersion of spherical PLMA-PHEMA nanoparticles at 10-20% w/w solids. PISA syntheses involving polar monomers in non-polar media have been previously reported but this particular system offers some unexpected and interesting challenges in terms of both synthesis and characterization.

Novel Selectivity: Target of Gas Sensing Defined by Behavior.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM), Tohoku University, Sendai, 980-8577, Japan.

Traditional selectivity of gas sensors determined by the magnitude of the response value has significant limitations. The distinctive inversion sensing behavior not only defies the traditional sensing theory but also provides insight into defining selectivity. Herein, the novel definition of selectivity is established in a study with VO(M1).

Statistics of random walks in geologically relevant conductance fields.

Phys Rev E

November 2024

Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 90089-2531, USA.

Statistics of diffusion, modeled by random walks, such as the mean number of distinct sites visited S(t) at time t, the mean probability P_{0}(t) of being at the origin of the walk, and the mean-squared displacements 〈R^{2}(t)〉 of the random walkers have been studied extensively in the past in both regular lattices and such disordered media as percolation clusters and other fractal structures, and universal power laws for such quantities have been derived. S(t) provides insight into reaction properties of geological formations, while P_{0}(t) is directly linked with the problem of back diffusion in remediation of groundwater aquifers. In all such studies, it was assumed that the conductances of the bonds that connect nearest-neighbor sites of the lattices are equal.
