Tonometric and tonographic techniques were evaluated in the normal pony and compared to other species. Applanation tonometry was utilised to calculate the ocular ridigity of the normal equine eye. The mean intraocular pressure for the pony eye was established as 23.5 mm Hg (sd +/- 4.5). Comparing the non-anaesthetised and anaesthetised pony eye (xylazine-ketamine and glycerol guaiacolate) no significant change in intraocular pressure occurred (P < 0.49). Mean aqueous outflow facility was 0.88 microliter/min/mm Hg (sd +/- 0.65) which is significantly higher (P < 0.01) than the canine and human species. The ocular rigidity values for the pony eye were higher which indicates that the eye is more rigid than either the canine or human eye.

A 6-year-old miniature Shetland pony mare was referred for evaluation of a left corneal mass, which developed from the healing tissue of a corneal traumatic ulceration that had occurred 4 weeks previously. On gross examination, a spherical, smooth-surfaced, and pink-colored lesion of about 1 cm in diameter was protruding from the left palpebral fissure. Ophthalmic examination revealed that it was attached to the scar tissue of the cornea, and that one corpora nigra was adherent to the posterior face of corneal wounded area, without sign of uveitis.

Background: Topical dexamethasone and prednisolone are currently the mainstay treatment for equine ophthalmic inflammatory diseases, such as equine recurrent uveitis. Objective: To describe ultrasonography as a diagnostic method of in vivo Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) in horses.
Animals Studied: Seven horses (three Icelandic horses, two Dutch Warmblood horses, one Appaloosa, and one Welsh Pony), presenting with moderate-to-severe focal or diffuse corneal edema, in whom DMD was suspected on ultrasonographic examination and confirmed with histopathology, were studied.
Procedure: A retrospective analysis of case records of horses with suspected DMD was performed.
