The UK-M isolate of the bipartite barley mild mosaic bymovirus (BaMMV UK-M) cannot be fungally transmitted, and has previously been shown to have a 1092 nt deletion in the coding region of RNA2. We now report, using sequence and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) data, that a subpopulation of BaMMV UK-M RNA2 contains a direct imperfect sequence repeat of 552 nt in the 3' untranslated region. The secondary structure of the 3' end of RNA2, and its possible effects on replication of the virus, are also discussed.

Rabies is a viral zoonosis that kills thousands of people annually in low- and middle-income countries across Africa and Asia where domestic dogs are the reservoir. 'Zero by 30', the global strategy to end dog-mediated human rabies, promotes a One Health approach underpinned by mass dog vaccination, post-exposure vaccination of bite victims, robust surveillance and community engagement. Using Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM) and whole genome sequencing (WGS), we enhanced rabies surveillance to detect an outbreak in a formerly rabies-free island province in the Philippines.

A multi-branched fluorogenic probe for the rapid and specific detection of Gram-negative bacteria is reported. Three Gram-negative-targeting azido-modified polymyxins were clicked onto a trivalent scaffold functionalised with the environmental green-emitting fluorophore 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole. The probe allowed wash-free detection of target bacteria with increased sensitivity and lower limits of detection compared to monovalent probes.
