Objectives: The overall goal of this article is to show that denial is one of the greatest obstacles to good practical judgment and is therefore a major problem in clinical ethics by examining its cognitive structure and the challenges it poses for clinical ethics consultation and intervention. In addition to clinical examples, excerpts of verbatim from citizen forums on triage protocols will be used to illustrate the manifestations of denial in citizens when faced with difficult choices.

Case Presentation: The initial waves of the pandemic and the alarming resurgence of cases with the emergence of highly transmissible variants have created increased pressure on many healthcare systems around the world.

Mendelian randomization (MR) is a statistical method that uses genetic variants as instrumental variables to estimate the causal effect of exposure on an outcome in the presence of unmeasured confounding. In this review, we argue that it is crucial to acknowledge the instrumental variable assumptions in MR analysis. We describe widely used MR methods, using an example from obesity-related metabolic disorders.

East Asia and the Pacific Surveillance Metrics and History of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Updated Epidemiological Assessment.

JMIR Public Health Surveill

January 2025

Buehler Center for Health Policy and Economics, Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health, Northwestern University, 420 E. Superior, Chicago, US.

Background: This study updates the COVID-19 pandemic surveillance in East Asia and the Pacific we first conducted in 2020 with two additional years of data for the region.

Objective: First, we measure whether there was an expansion or contraction of the pandemic in East Asia and the Pacific region when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency of international concern on May 5, 2023. Second, we use dynamic and genomic surveillance methods to describe the dynamic history of the pandemic in the region and situate the window of the WHO declaration within the broader history.

Given the challenges of overcrowded coastal aquaculture spaces and insufficient production, utilizing saline-alkaline water areas represents a vital strategy to alleviate these bottlenecks. Spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus), with its formidable osmoregulatory capabilities, is an ideal candidate to develop a saline-alkaline tolerant strain. In our study, genotypic and phenotypic data from 287 L.

State-space modelling using wastewater virus and epidemiological data to estimate reported COVID-19 cases and the potential infection numbers.

J R Soc Interface

January 2025

Department of Frontier Science for Advanced Environment, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University, Aoba 6-6-06, Aramaki, Aoba-ku, Sendai, Miyagi 980-8579, Japan.

The current situation of COVID-19 measures makes it difficult to accurately assess the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 due to a decrease in reporting rates, leading to missed initial transmission events and subsequent outbreaks. There is growing recognition that wastewater virus data assist in estimating potential infections, including asymptomatic and unreported infections. Understanding the COVID-19 situation hidden behind the reported cases is critical for decision-making when choosing appropriate social intervention measures.
