Purpose: To verify whether precision and accuracy of lipids analyses by a new portable device, Cholestech-lipid desktop analyzer (LDX), were in agreement with the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).
Methods: Serum samples from 45 outpatients were collected for the determination of total Cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG). These samples were analysed simultaneously by the Cholestech-LDX, and by the automatic enzymatic methods routinely used at the Heart Institute's laboratory. Precision was determined by repeating 20 times the evaluation of the same sample of venous blood. Accuracy was established confronting the values of the lipids variables obtained with Cholestech-LDX against the values determined by the automatic enzymatic routine.
Results: Accuracy for TC was 1.60% (NCEP < or = 3%), for HDL-C was -2.74% (NCEP < or = 6%) and for TG was 2.11% (NCEP < or = 5%). Precision for CT was 3.05% (NCEP < or = 3%), for HDL-C was 1.05% (NCEP < or = 6%) and for TG was 2.65% (NCEP < 5%).
Conclusion: Precision and accuracy of lipids evaluation by the Cholestech-LDX are within the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program. Therefore the cholestech-LDX seems to be a reliable alternative to the conventional biochemical routine, allowing population screenings.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea has been associated with various urinary system diseases, including prostatic hyperplasia and nocturia. Recently, it has been linked to prostate cancer. This study investigated the relationship between the apnea hypopnea index, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, and changes in PSA.

Postpartum urinary retention has a wide range of publicized incidences, likely caused by frequent misdiagnosis of this puerperal complication. Especially covert postpartum urinary retention has a high number of missed diagnoses due to the lack of symptoms and the time-extensive diagnostics via ultrasound, leading to no treatment and no appropriate follow-up. To simplify the diagnosis and establish a screening tool we analyzed the application of portable handheld-ultrasound devices (PUD) as used in Point-of-care diagnostics in comparison to established standard ultrasound devices (SUD).

Background & Aims: Eating habits during childhood have undergone significant changes, with a notable increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF). This situation deserves attention, given the close relationship between UPF and adverse health outcomes. This is due to the nutritional composition of UPF, which has high levels of health-critical nutrients such as sugar, fat, and sodium, thus compromising the overall quality of the diet.

Real-world emissions of particulate matter (PM) and smoke opacity were studied for an older-model diesel pickup truck during four types of driving tests, namely fixed-point test, snap-acceleration test, road test, and hill road test (uphill/downhill). A portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) and an opacimeter were used to measure real-time concentrations of PM and smoke opacity, respectively, and simultaneously. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive association between PM and opacity, suggesting the feasibility of using an opacimeter to estimate PM mass emissions from diesel vehicles.

Outdoor microcosms, metabarcoding with next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA bacterial gene, total body score (TBS) and physicochemical analyses were used to monitor Mus musculus decomposition aboveground (A) and in the subsurface (S), and compared to soil-only controls (C). As determined by MaAsLin2 analysis, significant shifts in bacterial communities at 30 cm depths within the A, S and C treatments distinguished control from experimental soils, and between aboveground and subsurface deposition, demonstrating the potential for gravesoil discrimination during the first 90 days. For example, Dokdonella (p = 0.
