Neurones immunoreactive for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) were studied in monkey medial prefrontal cortex. The majority (78.0%) of VIP+ neurones were bipolar cells located mainly in layers 2/3. Calretinin (CR) immunoreactivity was colocalised in 80.5% of VIP+ neurones. Furthermore, VIP+ puncta formed pericellular baskets around GABA immunonegative somata in layers 2/3. These results indicate that VIP/CR are colocalised in some bipolar cells and superficial pyramidal somata are likely targets of VIP+ neurones.

The gut-brain axis underlying hepatic encephalopathy in liver cirrhosis.

Nat Med

January 2025

Microbiome Medicine Center, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Up to 50-70% of patients with liver cirrhosis develop hepatic encephalopathy (HE), which is closely related to gut microbiota dysbiosis, with an unclear mechanism. Here, by constructing gut-brain modules to assess bacterial neurotoxins from metagenomic datasets, we found that phenylalanine decarboxylase (PDC) genes, mainly from Ruminococcus gnavus, increased approximately tenfold in patients with cirrhosis and higher in patients with HE. Cirrhotic, not healthy, mice colonized with R.

Introduction: The enteric nervous system (ENS) in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract is complex and comprises many neurons, which are differentiated in terms of structure, function and neurochemistry. Neuregulin 1 (NRG 1) is one of the neuronal factors synthesised in the ENS about the distribution and functions of which relatively little is known. The present study is the first description of the distribution of NRG 1 in the ENS in various segments of the porcine small intestine.

Introduction: This study explored the effects of prenatal exposure to fumonisins B (FB) on bone innervation in newborn Wistar rats.

Material And Methods: Pregnant dams (n = 6 per group) were assigned to either the control or one of two FB-exposed groups (60 mg or 90 mg/kg body weight) from the 7 day of gestation until parturition. On the day of parturition, one male pup from each litter (n = 6 per group) was randomly selected and euthanised, and their femurs were dissected for analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • MASLD (formerly NAFLD) is a significant cause of liver disease and there are limited treatment options available to prevent liver fat accumulation.
  • Research indicates that vasoactive intestinal peptide-producing neurons (VIP-neurons) impact fat absorption and IL-22 production, which may help protect the liver.
  • In experiments on mice, decreased communication between VIP-neurons and type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3) led to increased IL-22 production and reduced liver fat, suggesting this neuroimmune pathway could be a promising target for new therapies.

Ancient emergence of neuronal heterogeneity in the enteric nervous system of jawless vertebrates.

Division of Biology and Biological Engineering, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125, USA. Electronic address:

While the enteric nervous system (ENS) of jawed vertebrates is largely derived from the vagal neural crest, lamprey are jawless vertebrates that lack the vagal neural crest, yet possess enteric neurons derived from late-migrating Schwann cell precursors. To illuminate homologies between the ENS of jawed and jawless vertebrates, here we examine the diversity and distribution of neuronal subtypes within the intestine of the sea lamprey during late embryonic and ammocete stages. In addition to previously described 5-HT-immunoreactive serotonergic neurons, we identified NOS and VIP neurons, consistent with motor neuron identity.
