Results obtained for electron-irradiated oat, corn and wheat kernels are discussed. The applied irradiation doses were up to 160 kGy. For doses up to approx. 50 kGy the number of free radicals produced by the irradiation is linear with the absorbed dose; moreover, the decay at room temperature in the dark or in the presence of light is quite similar. These facts point to the possible use of these kernels as dosimeters. An analysis of the free radical decay as a function of time and temperature shows the contribution of at least three types of radicals, whose half-lifes, radiochemical yields and activation energies are given.

Background/aims: DNA isolation is the initial process in genetic research. The product is used in many PCR reactions (PCR-RFLP, Real-Time PCR, multiplex PCR). That is why it is important to optimize DNA isolation protocol to obtain a good quality of DNA.

The experimental determination of residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) rests on sampling the rotational motion of a molecule in an environment that induces a slightly nonuniform, unfortunately immeasurable, orientation distribution of the molecule in solution. Averaging over this slightly nonuniform, anisotropic distribution reduces the size of the dipolar couplings (DCs) from the kHz range to the Hz range for the resulting RDCs by a factor of 10 to 10. These features hamper the use of measured RDCs to contribute to the structure determination or refinement of (bio)molecules.

Amorphous solid water (ASW), formed vapour deposition under low temperature and pressure conditions, has been the focus of physical- and astro-chemists for some time as it represents the most likely formation process for interstellar ices. The porous structure of ASW has been found to be significantly impacted by deposition conditions, with little literature on the specific impacts of deposition temperature. This work utilises total neutron scattering (TNS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to provide direct experimental evidence that deposition temperature does indeed have a significant impact on the structure of grown ASW.

Furfural is a typical representative molecule of furan compounds and an important intermediate species in the oxidation of furan derivatives. The rate constant of furfural with OH is calculated for the first time using a high-level quantum chemistry method combined with the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory/master equation method. The M06-2X/jun-cc-pVTZ method was used to construct the potential energy surface of the reaction path.
