We report the development of a simple and rapid PCR assay for quantitation of the cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA load in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Using this system, a very good correlation was found between a high number of CMV copies in the blood and the presence of CMV disease in subjects with AIDS.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the risk of common opportunistic pathogens Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in intestinal mucosal tissues of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) patients and the number of peripheral blood NK cells.

Methods: UC patients admitted to a third-grade class-A hospital from January 2018 to December 2023 were selected as research population. Clinical data of the patients were collected from the electronic medical record system.

Cytomegalovirus reactivation (CMV-R) is a frequent complication post-allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), associated with poor outcomes. Previous studies have demonstrated the protective effect of CMV-R against relapse after allo-HSCT for acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML). However, this impact remains unclear in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Article Synopsis
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can lead to serious health issues in immunocompromised patients, making it crucial to monitor CMV levels and assess treatments effectively.
  • This study compared the accuracy and reliability of three commercial CMV quantitative assays across different platforms, testing 136 clinical plasma samples.
  • Results showed all assays were precise and provided similar results, with the best agreement between the Aptima and Alinity m assays, indicating their effectiveness for monitoring CMV levels in patients.

Licorice, known as the "elder statesman," is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulations. This study aims to establish a workflow combining animal and in silico experiments to elucidate the mechanisms of TCMs at both qualitative and quantitative levels. UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS was employed to qualitatively characterize the total components of honey-fried licorice and the plasma components after oral administration in Beagle dogs.

Dasatinib is a second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor employed for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment that achieves high rates of prolonged and complete molecular responses (MR). Among the adverse effects reported, it has been associated with hemorrhagic complications, mainly due to its inhibiting effects on platelet functions. In addition, immune alterations induced by dasatinib may elevate the risk of bleeding and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, thus contributing to the development of hemorrhagic colitis.
